This week, my daughter embarked on a new journey alongside her friend; they pedaled towards school with the morning sun casting a golden glow on their path. It was their ride unaccompanied by an adult, a significant milestone marking their growing independence and our trust in their abilities. This moment resonates deeply with a core value we cherish in the communities we build: celebrating transitions as progressions, not endings. In our communities, we honor those who venture out to explore new opportunities, recognizing that each departure enriches our collective experience. We applaud their courage to embrace change, much like a child's first ride without an adult. Their leaving is not a loss but a testament to the growth and development we foster within our ranks. Just as my daughter will circle back home, our departing colleagues often return, bringing with them fresh perspectives and experiences that invigorate our community. They venture out, learn, and come back to us, much like the alumni of a great institution whose ongoing contributions fuel continuous innovation and success. The cycle of leaving and returning is a powerful narrative that mirrors life's ebb and flow. Freedom Capital Markets hosted our Summer Family Office Summit last week in beautiful Montauk, New York. Thanks to our amazing speaker lineup, all of the family office attendees, and our sponsors. We started the day with an economic outlook overview, covered investments in Sports/Media/Entertainment, Tech & Innovation, and Alternatives. In addition to our sector topics, a panel of Family Offices spoke about structuring Co-Investments and Club Deals with other families, and we rounded out the day learning about how family offices can encourage and enhance board diversity and inclusivity at the portfolio level. Our luncheon keynote, Daphna Ziman, shared her passion for ways we can all make the world a better place, specifically around conscious media and tools for eradicating sex trafficking.   Of course, there was plenty of time for cocktails, socializing, and networking!   Throughout history, sailors and yacht club members have convened at the Montauk Yacht Club to share nautical expertise, exchange tales of their journeys, and forge bonds that transcend borders. In the same spirit, our summit has brought together talent from diverse backgrounds, united by a shared passion for finance, investment, and capital markets. 🌟 Making decisions that prioritize both professional commitments and family obligations is a delicate balance, one that I navigate daily as an event professional, CEO, mom, and wife. 💼👩💼 As my children and my company grow, the choices become increasingly challenging. In recent weeks, I found myself torn between multiple professional engagements and crucial family moments. 🗓️ While the allure of events like Smart Meetings in #NewOrleans and Event Tech Live in #LasVegas was undeniable, I ultimately chose to prioritize being present for my family and fulfilling my duties on the MPI Tennessee Chapter board. Juggling the demands of work and family can take a toll, and sometimes tough decisions must be made for the sake of sanity and well-being. 🤹♀️ My calendar may resemble a colorful patchwork of obligations, but every choice reflects my commitment to both my career and my loved ones. Even when opportunities like Meeting Professionals International WEC in #Louisville beckon, weighing the pros and cons is essential. ⚖️ Despite having registration and accommodation secured, I made the difficult choice to forgo this event, considering my husband's absence for a friends wedding , my son's graduation, daughters dance recital and other family commitments. While at the airport on my way to Strategic Coach CoachCon earlier this week, I had an unexpected surprise: I ran into my oldest daughter Brinley Marcum! She was headed to Europe, and we discovered that we both had layovers at the same airport, just a few gates apart. What?! 🎉 When I heard "Dad!" and saw her excited face, I nearly broke down in tears. We hugged and for the rest of the day, I had an extra bounce in my step. Next week, March 16th marks my 65th birthday. Throughout my life, I’ve had the privilege of travelling extensively and playing a significant role in developing many technologies that have become integral to our daily lives. It’s astonishing how quickly time has passed. Reflecting on the changes I’ve seen, originating from a Northern industrial town, the transformation is profound. We’ve moved from a world devoid of electronics, AI, PCs, productivity tools like Office 365, enterprise software, the cloud, the internet, Wi-Fi, mobile phones, GPS, mass storage, supersonic flight, and space exploration to one where these innovations are integral to our daily lives. Science fiction once painted a picture of the future that seemed distant, yet now, I find myself engaging with AI on my desktop, a testament to human ingenuity. Reality unfolds in both anticipated and surprising ways. While I couldn’t have predicted the emerging technologies, they have spawned new jobs, professions, and disciplines. However, on a social level, the promise of technology providing everyone with an opportunity for a better life has not been fully realized. The optimistic predictions of a three-day workweek and multiple careers contrast sharply with today’s debates over the merits of a four-day workweek. The rhetoric often misses the point, framing reduced work hours as either detrimental to capitalism or a sign of laziness rather than recognizing the potential for improved quality of life. Looking ahead, I envision a future where AI seamlessly integrates into our personal and business lives, handling tedious tasks and freeing us to engage more deeply with the world. This shift will allow us to be less reactive and more thoughtful, providing a foundation for making well-informed decisions. The four-day workweek is on the horizon and will likely become standard within five years. Embracing this change will be essential for businesses that aim to attract and retain top talent. Advances in “background technology” will drive productivity, enabling us to accomplish in four days what took five. Do I plan to take it easy or retire?
