On July 9, 1982, Michael Fagan broke into Buckingham Palace a little before 7:00 am. He wandered around for 15 minutes, found a shard of broken glass and walked into the the Queen’s bedroom where she was alone in her nightgown. How did this happen in what is supposed to be one of the most secure buildings in the world? - Too much “noise”: the alarms were constantly going off so security usually just ignored them. - Disconnect between security and operations: Security in the royal chambers only worked at nights. The palace staff (operations), which included the Queen’s footman were out walking the Royal dogs. How do you build an effective security program with your organization? - A full inventory of all your assets: You can’t protect what you don’t know exists. - Comprehensive documentation of all systems processes, including backups, DR/BC. - Accurate monitoring that tunes out the noise. - Regular reviews and testing, including risk assessment’s, penetration testing and tabletop exercises.
