What an incredible week!!! This go-round in Chicago was such an amazing experience and our Vistage Worldwide, Inc. workshops/sessions were some of the best I've been part of. I can't thank Jim Mack, David Galowich, and Michael N. Ross enough for their hospitality, engagement, and highly interactive members. We had some pretty "spirited" discussions about the immensely detrimental effects that stress causes and what it does to both leaders and salespeople. We had even more in-depth discussions around the value of hiring the right salespeople using the right assessments, y'all already know which one I like :) Lastly, we had very open and honest conversations about our belief systems and how much of what we've been taught about sales, sales leadership, and driving outcomes is the polar opposite of what works in today's environment. #leadership Today's leadership off-site at Croke Park wasn't just about strategy and numbers – it was a powerful reminder of why we do what we do. Ambition is the fuel that drives us forward. For me, it's the spark that challenges me to keep learning and growing. But the biggest ambition I hold is to empower those around me to reach their full potential. As we ascended the stands of Croke Park, a place steeped in history and national pride since 1884, overlooking the hallowed grounds that have hosted over 82,000 passionate fans, a simple sign caught my eye: "A Place of Belonging." It struck a chord deep within. When we feel like we belong, like we're part of something bigger, that's when our ambitions truly thrive. Thought of the Day - February 02, 2024 If you do a job another’s way, he or she must take the responsibility. If you do it your way, you must take the responsibility. The “loneliness at the top” that senior officials often feel comes from the certain knowledge that they alone are responsible for the failure or success of the organization. They may share their authority with associates, but not their responsibility. When a sports franchise suffers a losing season, the general manager and the coaches are held accountable. They, not the individual players, are responsible for the failure of the team; the team merely followed orders. When you become the leader, when you set the course, you must accept responsibility for the outcome. #ThoughtOfTheDay #UPPLife #LeaveNoRegrets

During a typical week, I usually receive 3 to 5 requests from undergraduate or graduate students to meet and discuss my career path. This is something that I genuinely enjoy because the journey of Co-Founding Waterford Property Company with #JohnDrachman was one of the most challenging things I have done in my life.   There are multiple factors that lead to career success, but two that I discuss when I meet with students are: 1) Figure out what makes you unique and lean into it and 2) Focus on becoming an effective leader. I am passionate about the study of leadership. To be an effective leader reading is an absolute necessity. As Charlie Munger said, “In my whole I have known no wise people who didn’t read all the time.” There is no quick read to learn how to become a leader, it is a life-long journey that requires constant learning. Each book provides incremental knowledge and data points that when combined, provide the foundation for an effective leader. I am constantly updating and curating my reading list, similar to a fine wine collection.   In addition to reading, it is also essential to teach and or coach to grow as a leader. Leaders must quickly analyze and distill information and then clearly communicate it to their team. For me as an ex-college basketball player, nothing helps me with this more than coaching #youthbasketball .   I just completed coaching my son’s 3rd and 4th grade basketball team. To see the growth of my team throughout the season and be able to help set the foundation for the next generation of leaders was awesome. While we lost a heart breaker in the Championship game of the Long Beach NJB City Championship this past Sunday, I am extremely proud of our team and the way we competed and played with passion.   While I am confident that I helped set a strong leadership foundation for all the players on my team and created community impact, the impact my team had on me was just as transformative. Reflecting on Leadership A few years ago, I had the incredible experience of participating in the Golden Gate relay with an amazing team. This race spans 190 miles from Calistoga to Santa Cruz, CA, divided into 36 legs and run by teams of twelve over two days. Each member runs three legs, varying in length and difficulty, ensuring someone is always running. For me, that meant running 14.5 miles over two days. This photo, with me in the pink shirt at the center, perfectly encapsulates why I believe that all good leaders know they are only as strong and effective as their team. Completing this race required constant teamwork, communication, and support. We divided into two vehicles, alternating between running and supporting our teammates. The Golden Gate relay wasn't just a physical challenge; it was a lesson in leadership. Surrounding yourself with people who have unique skills and perspectives, who care about the team, and who build rapport, camaraderie, and commitment is essential. This race was tough and exhausting, filled with challenges, but it was the strength of our team that made it possible for us to succeed. There was no need for a single person to step up and take charge because everyone was committed, everyone cared, and everyone ensured we all finished together. I just started making money." ~UConn Coach, Dan Hurley This was Hurley’s response to questions about him potentially entertaining a coaching position at the University of Kentucky. What he and his team (and “my” team!) just accomplished — back to back NCAA National Championships — is historic. But if you look at the individual players, yes they’re good. But they’re arguably not the best (individually) in college basketball. And yes, they run an offense like you’ve never seen before, rebound like crazy people, and play smothering defense. But I firmly believe it’s ultimately the trust and energy that Hurley’s created, with his authenticity being his #1 strategic advantage. It’s statements like the above that epitomize his authentic leadership. In times when he could phone it in and give the cookie cutter response, he doesn’t. Why? Because that would be a missed opportunity -To build trust with the media. -To demonstrate the culture to potential recruits. -To build intrigue and likability with the fans. Authenticity takes a little work. It requires you to expose who you are, when people least expect it, in the service of others.
