Planet a Summit 2024 🎬 How to separate hype from the real deal when it comes to investing in climate AI? What is the path to building unicorns like 1komma5 out of Europe? Where are the greatest opportunities for technology to solve the greatest challenges facing humanity? These are just some of the topics we explored on stage and off, at our Planet A Summit in June. Here’s a flavour of what went down! Thanks to everyone who joined us for some crazy special days in Berlin.

We are excited to be one of Climate Change AI's 2023 Innovation Grantees in partnership with June Lukuyu at the University of Washington. This project, based in #Ghana, aims at a cost-effective solution involving machine learning algorithms to detect and localize distribution grid losses, particularly in the low-voltage networks where most issues occur. Identifying such issues promptly can better enable grid operators in Ghana and elsewhere to improve #gridreliability and effectively meet power demand, lowering both costs and associated greenhouse gas emissions. More details on this project at the intersection of #energy, #climatechange, and #AI are here: https://lnkd.in/ghmcNKea
We are excited to present the fourth project of our 2023 Innovation Grants cohort: From Observing Power to Improving Power: Loss Localization in the Distribution Grid through Topology Lead Institution: University of Washington Team Members: June Lukuyu (University of Washington), Genevieve Flaspohler, Mohini Bariya, Joshua Adkins, Kwame Abrokwah, PMP, Noah Klugman (nLine) This project proposes a cost-effective solution that meets energy demands of low-and middle-income countries. This solution involves voltage sensing at customer connections and machine learning algorithms to detect and localize distribution grid losses, particularly in the low-voltage network where most issues occur. The Climate Change AI Innovation Grants Program 2023 is supported by Quadrature Climate Foundation, Google DeepMind, Global Methane Hub and the Canada Hub of Future Earth. Marketer with a mission | Head of Marketing at Spherical | Positioning, messaging, and GTM | PLG lover | Climate tech enthusiast
Yesterday I was able to attend the AI LA Earth Summit, a day of talks and chats about how data and machine learning applications can be applied to the Climate space. There were a few unintended themes: 📊You can only manage what you measure - About half the speakers addressed some kind of major gaps in our understanding. Anupa Asokan in particular highlighted just how little we know about our oceans, even just basic maps. Companies like Joshua Fisher's Hydrosat and the nonprofit Carbon Mapper are relying on satellites with better instruments to get more accurate pictures, for instance. 📍 Problems are big, but solutions are local - You eat a whale one bite at a time, and every climate tech company addresses a fraction of the whole. So the efforts of companies like Nextjet or Bill Beverley's Evolectric - CircularEV™ Solutions add up. Central planning probably won't solve our big problems. 🔦 You don't know what you don't know, so find out. - We're walking bundles of unconscious biases, so it's paramount to bring in the voices unlike your own. If you're aiming for a global reach, you need global input. And taking a trip isn't enough - bring in people with lived experience. Cool stuff, good thinking, and I love seeing LA flexing its climate muscles.

𝐍𝐄𝐖 𝐑𝐄𝐏𝐎𝐑𝐓: We worked with Climate Change AI and Data Innovators to understand Grand Challenge initiatives in AI for climate and nature. Commissioned by the Bezos Earth Fund, this report analyzed 200+ programs to provide an in-depth guide on how to design and run Grand Challenges. It supported the development of BEF's $100-million #AIforClimateandNature Grand Challenge. CODE contributed to this report by conducting interviews with organizers, participants, judges, and other Grand Challenge stakeholders. The current state of AI companies and their power consumption reminds me of the early days of search when Google had a team working exclusively on shortening response times. This work was for the user's benefit, but it also reduced power consumption by using less compute and directing queries to the closest data center. Hopefully we'll start to hear about climate heroes at AI companies that are working towards lightening the power consumption.
For PNW Climate Week, Hansi Singh, PhD participated in a packed panel event on "Artificial Intelligence: Friend or Foe for the Planet?" at the Georgetown Steam Plant CDA yesterday! The panel discussion covered the intersection of climate and AI: from the power of AI and machine learning in climate intelligence and action, to the perils of AI in driving unsustainable energy use and consumption habits. Moderated by: Jordan Bain Panelists included: Heather Redman Vikram Modgil Sailesh Chutani Jai Jaisimha #PNWClimateWeek #Planette #EnvironmentalForecasting #ClimateRiskMitigation
