Today marks both International Women's Day and Women in Construction Week. It's a perfect occasion to come together to convert obstacles into prospects and forge a brighter tomorrow for everyone. Our vision is to not only be the first-choice builder, contractor, and developer but also to be the first-choice employer for everyone within the industry. Our business depends on our people. Hear from some of our inspiring women below and if they have grabbed your attention and you are interested in looking at a career in construction, there is a wide variety of information and roles available to you. Women into Construction CIC Go Construct Angela Harrington, Accounts - I have worked in Construction for nearly 35 years with my role changing and developing along the way. There are many opportunities for women to have a long and flourishing career in the Building Industry and Rose is a very good place to start! Perception of the industry and out-dated methods have now changed, allowing many more doors to open. If you do decide the building industry is for you, anything is possible! Tracy Wilson, Support Services - After 22 1/2 years’ service in the British Army, I immediately felt like I fitted in here at Rose Builders and within construction. My role is remarkably busy and varied, with no two days being the same. I embrace the challenges and the multitude of random and different tasks I do. With lots of laughter along the way, I can honestly say it is a pleasure and a joy to come to work. It has been a challenging couple of years finding my way in civilian society, but I now feel I am finally there. In celebration of Women in Construction Week and International Women's Day, we spotlight Brytni Simmons, a Staff Accountant who exemplifies excellence and serves as a role model for young girls. Brytni's work, crucial to the smooth operation of our projects, proves that success in construction isn't confined to traditional roles. Her achievements highlight the importance of diversity and skill across all facets of the industry. Brytni’s story is a fine example for aspiring young girls, demonstrating that with passion and perseverance, they can excel in any aspect of construction, from finance to engineering. As we honor women in construction this week, Brytni and all of our Green Leaf Construction women; Christina Raptis, Liz Mason, Cortney Kiewel and Maxine Horrigan stand as testaments to the power of breaking barriers and the critical role women play in shaping a more inclusive and innovative future. 👷♀️ How long have you worked in the construction industry? I have been involved in the industry for almost 4.5 years, 4 of those months here 😊   👷♀️ What do you like best about construction? I like that the construction industry offers an opportunity to create something that can improve a community. It's rewarding to see a building that you (your company) worked on. That building could be housing, or it could even be for a business that creates jobs. I like that it's not just a building.   👷♀️ Did you always want to be in construction or growing up did you want to be something else? Yes, I knew I wanted to be a part of construction. I have many family members who are involved. Some family members work in construction directly and some are jack of all trades and know how to do a little bit of everything (electrical, plumbing, etc.), therefore I grew up in the environment. When I was in high school, I was a part of a technical division, where as a freshman I was able to pick a trade to learn more about it. I decided to go into Architecture. Which lead me further into schooling and internships. I have learned so much about the construction industry and have a high respect for everyone apart of it, a lot of hard work goes into this industry.    👷♀️ What do you want young girls to know about the field of construction? Although it generally is a male dominated field, don’t let that stop you. Doesn’t matter if you are in the field or in the office, you have the ability to make a difference.  There are a lot of behind-the-scenes moments that not many people think about. Stepping out of your comfort zone can also open the door to many opportunities. If you want to be in the office, great! If you want to be in the field, great! You can do anything you put your mind to. The construction industry, known for its traditional image of hard-hatted, predominantly male workers, has long grappled with stereotypes that hinder diversity and inclusivity. Stereotypes are deeply ingrained perceptions or assumptions about specific groups, and in construction, they have limited the industry's scope. Overcoming these stereotypes begins with awareness and education. Recognise the harm they cause and the potential they have to discourage underrepresented groups from pursuing careers in construction. I believe a critical step toward overcoming stereotypes is revising curriculums. Ensure it represents diverse voices, experiences, and contributions in the construction industry. Incorporate case studies and examples that showcase the achievements of individuals from various backgrounds, thereby countering the notion that only one type of person belongs in construction. Offer mentorship and support to students from underrepresented backgrounds. Let them know that you believe in their potential and are there to help them succeed in the industry. Challenging stereotypes and fostering diversity in construction education is a challenging yet necessary undertaking. We all play a role in dismantling these barriers and nurturing an inclusive industry. By raising awareness, providing diverse role models, and cultivating an inclusive learning environment, you empower students to see that the construction industry is for everyone, regardless of their background. Let's rise to the challenge, confront stereotypes, and work together toward a future where diversity is celebrated, and every student feels welcome and valued in the world of construction. Meet Becky - Engineering Manager in the North East region at Avant. As part of Women in Construction Week, we asked Becky questions about her role and the opportunities for women in construction: How did you get into working in construction? A career in construction wasn’t something that I had thought about. I was unsure which university course to do after finishing my A levels, when I saw an advert for a position in a technical department at a large house builder. I got the job and found that I was passionate about house design work. After studying a part time engineering course, I started doing design work on some of the smaller developments until progressing to managing the larger, more challenging sites. What do you think opportunities for women are like within construction? For the first few years of my career there weren’t many women in the industry doing technical jobs such as site management, engineering, and architecture, and it was sometimes challenging to change people’s perspectives of what roles women should pursue. The industry has changed, and there are now more and more women considering these roles and excelling in them. A few years ago, I was asked to go into a primary school and give a talk on the opportunities for women in construction. Most of the girls in the class had never considered it as an option before, as they viewed it as “a job for boys”. It was nice to be able to show that the opportunities are there if you want to take them. How has Avant helped you progress in your career in construction? Since joining Avant, I have been given the support and backing to manage challenging developments. I have also been more closely involved with other departments, providing engineering advice and solutions on new and ongoing developments. The construction industry is facing a 'perceived image' challenge. With nearly 51,000 new entrants needed by 2030, it's crucial to highlight the diversity of roles beyond just 'on-site' work. The sector is brimming with varied opportunities, including managerial, professional, and skilled trades. The report highlights that schools often fail to inform students about these opportunities. Women in Construction Week celebrates the roles of women in the construction industry.  C&S Companies is proud of the many women we have sharing their skills and expertise in various construction roles!  Today, we want to introduce you to Madeline Smith, Senior Estimator! 👷🏽  ❓ How many years have you been with C&S Companies?  1 year  ❓ What led you to a career in construction? How we build and what resources we use directly impacts how much energy we consume. I saw construction as an industry I could have a direct connection to environmental solutions, while building a secure career.    ❓ What does a typical day at work look like for you? As an estimator I am primarily in the office although I do visit pre-construction jobsites regularly. I interface with the design teams, construction project managers, subcontractors, and owners daily. Most of my effort sits in pre-construction but I get time in design, during active construction and certainly post-construction as we digest actual cost.    ❓ What motivates you? Learning, and there is no shortage of things to learn in the construction industry.    ❓ What is your favorite part of your career?  My favorite part of my career is watching projects I worked on in concept and pre-construction get built and change the local landscape.    ❓ Favorite aspect of working at C&S?  Hands down, the people. Tech has the best team I have ever had the pleasure to be a part of.   ❓ Share a fun fact about yourself! Outside of work, I am a farmer. I grow hay, raise chickens, and grow every vegetable that I can.    ❓ What piece of advice do you have for young women who are interested in the construction field? Take up as much space as you need. WIC Post! Meet Ashley Mechor- Branch Administrator Ashley has been with Flynn Group of Companies for 12+Years and is crucial support to the many people on our Saskatoon team. 1. Why did you choose the construction industry as your career path? "While in university, I was interested in drafting and AutoCAD programs and thought I could put my skills to use in the construction industry. Thankfully, I got my foot in the door at Flynn and the people immediately helped me feel right at home. I did make a few moves around a couple different departments until I found my current position, and it has been the one that fits me best!"    2. What’s one thing you truly enjoy about your role? "I enjoy being able to contribute and help fellow coworkers get a job started and keep things running smoothly throughout the project by ensuring things are organized and easily accessible, or by just being a second set of eyes to ensure things aren’t missed. I enjoy feeling needed and that I am also an important part of the puzzle."   3. What can organizations do to support the attraction, and retention of women in the construction industry? "I think showcasing that all positions within the construction industry are genderfluid and that women are not limited to certain roles. Expressing support from management and HR to make women feel comfortable asking for help, to advance, or to branch out into different fields as needed.  Ensuring all current employees are aware and learning about positions being genderfluid so they can also help make new female coworkers feel more comfortable, accepted, and encourage advancement when merited."   4. What’s one piece of advice you would give to a newcomer looking to enter the construction industry? "Speak up, ask questions! We are all working on the same team, and all want a safe and enjoyable workplace. All ideas matter, even if you are completely new to the industry or just new to a workplace, your ideas could make all the difference!"
