Should employees get extra holidays if they never get sick? We had this rule back in Booking.com - if you don't get sick in the first half a year, you get an extra day off. If you don't get sick in the second half, you get another day off and then one more due to not being sick the whole year. Back then I was happy about that system and hardly took sick days (we won't talk about the days when people came half-sick to the office...), but now I'm thinking how fair it was. What about those who have chronic pain? Those whose health in general isn't so good? Those who get a long-term sickness? Those who don't want to get others sick and decide to stay home with a virus? Not sure if they still have this rule, but I haven't come across it in other companies since that. Pretty sure it still exists somewhere out there though. #Sick #DaysOff #Holidays #EmployeeHandbook #SickDays #Health

Tap into the Power of Physician Wellbeing - For Individual Doctors & Healthcare Organizations - 40,000 Doctor Coached or Trained since 2010 👉🏼7 Habits of Physician Wellbeing LIVE WORKSHOP👈🏼 Booking All 2024 Dates.
US PHYSICIANS ARE TRUE WORKAHOLICS AND this is a uniquely American phenomenon. Here's how I know this to be true. I have trained over 40,000 doctors to date, in the USA and Australia England and Canada. I will often stand at the front of a meeting room where several hundred doctors are gathered for a Medical Staff Meeting and ASK: **How many of you have a two-week vacation on your calendar right now? ** 👉 Less than 5% of the hands will go up in an American audience. The rest of the audience just frowns, looks down at their toes and shakes their head slowly back and forth. 👉 Outside of the USA all the hands go up and they shrug their shoulders and look at me LIKE I'M CRAZY to ask the question. It's a stark difference and just one more way the USA is a uniquely unhealthy healthcare system. A solid two-week, work-free vacation is a key component of a healthy physician's personal wellness strategy. Just ask any doctor who has developed this habit. For most, it is the ONLY TIME they can completely relax and let go But ONLY IF they DO NOT take calls or check messages or emails while out of town. We have even developed checkout checklists and specific dialog to let your staff and partners know YOU ARE OFF LINE WHEN ON VACATION Details from the Study: Researchers mailed surveys to 3671 members of the American Medical Association from 2020 to 2021, and 1162 (31.7%) responded. Another 6348 (7.1%) responded to an email survey sent to 90,000 physicians. An analysis suggested the respondents were representative of all US practicing physicians. Among 3024 respondents who responded to a subsurvey about vacations, about 40% took more than 15 days of vacation over the past year, about 40% took 6-15 days, and about 20% took 5 or fewer days. Fewer than half of physicians said their electronic health record (EHR) inboxes were fully covered by others while they were away. About 70% said they worked while on vacation, with nearly 15% working an hour or more each day. Emergency physicians were the least likely and anesthesiologists were the most likely to take at least 15 days of vacation per year, according to the study. https://lnkd.in/gE7xDEVC

If you're already on Breathe, then your life has been made easy. This bank holiday has been added to Breathe's statutory holidays within the calendar and any employees who had previously booked annual leave over this day will now be receiving this day added back, automatically, to their entitlement. If you're still on spreadsheets, or paper even, remember to look through your holiday requests and approvals to recalculate and notify those on holiday that they will be receiving time back. Which brings us to another reminder - we are halfway through 2024 already! Have you checked in on your holiday policies and practices? Remind your team to ensure they have booked and taken circa 50% of their annual leave. Reporting on holidays and checking in now will ensure you can encourage your team to take much-needed breaks before they are burnt out and potentially lose out on holiday they could and should have used. With Breathe's automatic holiday charts and burnout reports, take away your admin and make the switch now - you will see a ROI in no time! Now share this reminder to your colleagues and get in touch with vicky@hrnow.je to speak all things bridgerto... sorry, Breathe-related now! #breathe #holidayadmin #automatedhr

If you needed proof that burnout is a persistent problem in the healthcare field, just look at these recent numbers: 20% of physicians took less than one week of vacation over the past year, while roughly 70% of physicians worked while on vacation. While physicians don't always have the luxury of working 9-to-5, they still need to take time to physically and mentally unwind, so this consistent trend of missing out on vacation time doesn't bode well for their wellbeing. #Burnout #Healthcare #Wellbeing

For those unfamiliar with the abbreviation EHR it means ELECTRONIC HEALTH RECORD and doctors who do not find “coverage” are not ignoring it but are still checking it themselves. So basically they take they take their work with them while on “vacations”! When less vacation was taken, work was done while away and there was no EHR inbox coverage while out, there was an increase in the physicians’ risk of burnout, according to the study. It is a tremendous and ballooning problem not just for physicians but for health systems, insurers and their patients. Reducing physician burnout is a critical component of the AMA Recovery Plan for America’s Physicians. But after all those endless years spent on nothing much but medicine can physicians really ever change their ways? Perhaps all premeds who are accepted into medical schools should be mandated to take the summers (6 weeks) off, and this should be mandatory throughout all their years of training. Their professional use of computers and EHR assigned to be screened by other qualified primary care healthcare professionals such as nurse practitioners and physician assistants who can notify the coverage physician if necessary. #burnoutrecovery #professionalburnout #physicians #electronichealthrecords #ehr

This week, we tackled this question from a 27-year-old member of the Equipt community. How would you answer it? "I’m all for taking my vacation, but most of my colleagues don’t, and they frown upon me for doing so. I fear being judged as uncommitted, a slacker, or worse, dispensable. What do I do?” Here was our answer... That must be frustrating. You’re right to want to take your vacation days – it’s part of your compensation, after all. You have a few options: 1. Share your research so they understand the importance and value of vacation - to you AND the company (the article below underscores 5 great benefits). 🙌 2. Probe what is holding them back. Is it management expectations? Process complications? Outdated norms? 🕵️♀️ 3. Suggest a pilot where everyone agrees to take their vacation – so the team can feel the collective benefits.🤝 4. Talk to your manager to see if old policies can be updated or if expectations can be reset for the team. 🔄 5. Last, if none of that works, take your vacation. Unapologetically. You earned it. 💪 What else would you advise in this situation? https://lnkd.in/g6pyu7vg.

Are you a healthcare provider who finds yourself working or charting on vacation? According to this article, about 70% of physicians chart on vacation. And yet, taking true vacation time can decrease burnout and turnover- two huge negative impacts on our current healthcare system is facing in the US. Is it really "Paid Time Off" or "Pretend Time Off"? Let me know your thoughts as I get ready to start my next "Eliminate After-Hours Charting" Course tomorrow. Send me a message or comment if you want to learn more about the course that has saved attendees hours each week in charting time.

Why aren’t your staff using their full holiday allowance? A recent survey revealed that people in ALL industries aren’t taking their full holiday allowance…read here: https://lnkd.in/ddb6KSUg Taking those breaks away from your environment is key in looking after our mental and physical health, but if staff aren’t taking it, then organisations should be asking why? Reasons from the recent survey identified that poor planning, FEARS of FALLING BEHIND at work, a HEAVY WORKLOAD played a part in not taking a break… Measuring sickness absences, staff turnover over, HOLIDAY registers as well as conducting health surveys, focus groups are all ways EMPLOYERS can measure the health climate of an organisation. If staff aren’t taking their breaks, particularly due to a HEAVY WORKLOAD then organisations should be asking themselves questions….are they promoting a positive mental health culture? Are your staff using their full holiday entitlement? Worth a check… By promoting a positive mental health culture an employer will see: 👍A decreased staff turnover 👍Improved performance and productivity 👍Attracting new talent 👍A happier and healthier work force 👍Less sickness absences What employer wouldn’t want this? If your ORGANISATION would like some advice and guidance on promoting a POSITIVE MENTAL HEALTH CULTURE then get in touch with us at: info@x-calibremh.co.uk or visit our website at: www.x-calibremh.co.uk #positivementalhealth #mentalhealthintheworkplace #mentalhealthatwork
