A couple of weeks ago, I had the honor of attending ADCOLOR Conference and Awards as a Google delegate. I’ve taken the time since to reflect on what I’ve learned and here are my top takeaways: #1 - Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) work can’t be a standalone focus area, relegated to a few teams—particularly HR or marketing—it’s a company-wide imperative with quantifiable business impact. #2 - Companies must do the work internally before they attempt to show it externally. #3 - Representation is critical in all advertising. It’s the only way to build acceptance within broader society AND not come across as opportunistic. #4 - Consistency is key to showing up authentically. See #3 for how to do this sustainably.
