ANZ / Suncorp Merger ANZ has finally secured approval to acquire Suncorp's banking arm for $4.9 billion after nearly two years of legal battles and appeals. The deal, announced in July 2022, initially faced opposition from the ACCC, but ANZ's successful appeal led to conditional approval from the treasurer. These conditions include no net job losses across both companies for three years, no closure of regional ANZ branches for the same period, and a commitment to $15 billion in lending for Queensland's Olympic Games infrastructure and renewable energy projects. Not sure how that last one relates to anything... but interesting to see what these big banks will agree to for a larger piece of that home loan pie!

Major news in the financial press today; ANZ has WON it's appeal against the ACCC's blocking of its takeover attempt at Suncorp. Almost 2,000 people watched the verdict live on YouTube. Suncorp has been wanting to offload it's Banking arm and focus in on their Insurance business. The $4.9 Billion deal isn't done yet, as it needs to be rubber-stamped by the QLD Treasurer. But with ANZ promising a new Technology Hub in Townsville it would seem that this is going to be a shoe in. If the deal can get done, it will be the biggest in Australian Banking since the GFC, when Westpac acquired St George. Wonder how this will impact the Home Lending market... #capitalmarkets

As ANZ's acquisition of Suncorp Bank draws closer, with just a couple of regulatory pieces of the puzzle to complete, ANZ managing director Suncorp integration Daniel King says the first 100 days once the $4.9 billion deal goes through will be critical to the deal's success. King said such a large-scale transformation was complex and required services, systems and processes to ensure a seamless experience for Suncorp Bank staff and customers from day one. He said the project would involve multiple stakeholders, intricate processes, diverse technologies and operational change. Today, ANZ announced a cash profit from continuing operations of A$3,552 million, which was down 1 per cent on the prior half. ANZ’s Common Equity Tier 1 Ratio increased to 13.5 per cent and Cash Return on Equity was 10.1 per cent. The proposed Interim Dividend is 83 cents per share, partially franked at 65 per cent. Massive news both in terms of the banking landscape but also in terms of ramping up the market as a whole. There will now be a massive separation program at Suncorp, a massive integration at ANZ. ANZ posted a 7% fall in its cash #profit at $3.55 billion in its first half compared to the same time last year.
