Today, Florida legislators presented JAXPORT with a $30 million check to purchase two new container cranes at the port’s Blount Island Marine Terminal. The Florida Legislature appropriated the funds during this past legislative session under the leadership of House Speaker Paul Renner and Senate President Kathleen Passidomo with support from the Duval Legislative Delegation. Members of the Duval Delegation include State Representatives Jessica Baker, Dean Black, Kimberly Daniels, Wyman Duggan, Kiyan Michael, and Angie Nixon, as well as State Senators Tracie Davis and Clay Yarborough. “Our ports must be well-equipped to meet the growing demands of our region, ensuring that supplies make it into the hands of consumers,” said Florida House Speaker Paul Renner. “This year’s budget allocates $30 million for the purchase of two new ship-to-shore cranes, replacing outdated equipment at the port. The acquisition of these cranes will increase the efficiency and capacity of JAXPORT, improving vessel turnaround and supply chain efficiency.” “This funding will significantly improve container-handling capabilities at Florida’s largest container port, ensuring JAXPORT can continue to meet the growing cargo volume needs of Florida businesses and consumers and build on our position as a global gateway in the Southeast U.S.,” said JAXPORT CEO Eric Green. 💡 Did you know? 🚢📦 In 1956, Malcolm McLean revolutionised global trade by inventing and patenting the first standard shipping container in the USA. Despite not being directly involved in ocean shipping, McLean, the owner of the largest trucking company in the country at the time, envisioned a more seamless and efficient intermodal transportation system. At the onset of his trucking business, cargo was laboriously loaded and unloaded in irregular-sized wooden crates. Witnessing the inefficiency of this method during dock operations, McLean foresaw the benefits of standardising cargo transfer across trucking and shipping companies. McLean acquired the Pan Atlantic Tanker Company along with its shipping assets. This strategic move allowed him to experiment and refine loading and unloading techniques, culminating in the birth of the standard shipping container. In April 1956, the inaugural container ship, the Ideal X, set sail from Port Newark and successfully navigated to Houston, marking a new era in freight transportation. #shippingcontainers #effciency #lightbulbmoments www.freightpeople.com.au

The recent incident at the Port of Baltimore has resulted in a significant disruption of maritime traffic. A Maersk-charted vessel, part of the 2M Alliance's TP12/Empire service, collided with a key suspension bridge, leading to its collapse and causing casualties and vehicles to fall into the water. This event has necessitated the closure of the port, which is a critical hub for container lines and the largest on the US East Coast for roll-on, roll-off cargo. The suspension of vessel traffic is likely to exert pressure on container lines, potentially affecting ocean service reliability and causing congestion at other ports due to diverted vessel calls. Despite the maritime standstill, the port's main container terminal, Seagirt, continues to process trucks. Seagirt is a significant terminal, having handled over a million TEUs and nearly 400,000 auto units last year. The Maryland Port Administration has confirmed that the suspension will remain in effect until further notice, emphasizing the severity of the situation and the ongoing efforts to manage the aftermath. #portofbaltimore, #containershipping, #imports, #exports, #maritime, #oceanservices

SC&RA is working hard get state approval for axle group weight limit increases for West Coast trunnions in the three remaining states who do not allow this weight limit: Colorado, Utah and Oklahoma. The Permit Subcommittee of the Colorado DOT’s Freight Advisory Council (FAC) met Monday evening to consider a proposal to increase the state’s maximum weight limit for axle groups on a 9-axle “West Coast” trunnion trailer. The proposal, brought forward by SC&RA Board of Directors member, Dan Wells (ProMiles), and accompanied by a technical presentation from Chris Smith, VP of Transportation, requests Colorado increase its maximum weight limit to 60,000 lbs. per axle group for these specific trailer types, harmonizing the state’s policy with most other states in its region. This increase recognizes the equivalent weight distribution the 9-axle trunnion configuration has with respect to the 13-axle tandem combination, also widely used, but operating at nearly 24 feet longer than the trunnion. The trunnion system can achieve such weight distribution at a shorter length by redistributing additional tires on independent axles that also provide additional load stability. SC&RA will keep members posted on any developments from this meeting.

The The Port of Virginia, which has Walmart, Lowe's Companies, Inc.’s and other top retailers as some of its primary customers, is on track to become the widest and deepest port on the U.S. East Coast by early 2025 after a $450 million dredging project in Norfolk Harbor is completed. Ultra-large containerships that can carry over 20,000 twenty-foot equivalent cargo units have become a big money issue for port operators. These ocean vessels challenge the economics of marine servicing because their size limits traffic to one-way, cutting down on the number of ships a terminal can “turn”, while the ports make no money on transit into and out of port.
