📋 𝐈𝐬 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐍𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐚𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐅𝐚𝐦? 📋 When a supply chain network is less-than-optimal for meeting the needs of customers, it can easily turn into an inventory farm—a place where, instead of moving smoothly through the network, inventory starts to grow, becoming pooled in warehouses as a safeguard against bottlenecks. 📦 The following outlines two ways in which your supply chain network design can breed inventory: (𝘚𝘦𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘭 𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘴…) 👇 📌 𝑻𝒐𝒐 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒚 𝑺𝒕𝒐𝒄𝒌 𝑳𝒐𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 Having too many stock locations can reduce supply chain efficiency because you will need to transfer goods from one warehouse to another, implement cross-docking, or deliver to customers from multiple warehouses, which increases the number of times inventory is touched between manufacture/purchase and delivery to end customers. Have just the right amount of warehouses in just the right locations to service customers at the highest level of cost-effectiveness. 📍 📌 𝑺𝒖𝒑𝒑𝒍𝒊𝒆𝒓 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒙𝒊𝒎𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑹𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒂𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚 The natural response to long lead times and unreliable inbound supply is to increase the amount of inventory held in your warehouses. However, in some cases, inventory-carrying costs can be saved by relocating one or more warehouse operations to be closer to key suppliers. This can improve inbound supply reliability, reduce the amount of inventory your company needs to hold and over time, pay back more than the amount invested in relocation. 💰📋 Supply chain network design optimisation doesn’t always have to involve the expense of relocating your own facilities, but it does require a high degree of collaboration with your suppliers and other partners which can also mean your customers. 🤝 How did you optimise your supply chain design and avoid an inventory farm? 🧐 Let us know in the comments! #supplychainsecrets #inventorymanagement #networkdesign

How important is the location of a warehouse, and what factors should be considered? Hey there! The location of a warehouse is absolutely crucial and can make a world of difference in how efficiently and cost-effectively your supply chain operates. Picture this: a few years back, I was working with a retail company that decided to move one of its main warehouses. The previous location was causing delays and extra transportation costs, which were eating into our profits. By strategically relocating, we saw an immediate improvement in delivery times and a significant reduction in shipping expenses. When considering where to place a warehouse, there are several key factors to keep in mind. First, proximity to major transportation hubs—like highways, railways, airports, and ports—is vital. This ensures faster and more flexible shipping options. Second, consider the location relative to your customer base. Being closer to your main markets can reduce delivery times and costs. Third, labor availability and costs in the area are important; you need a reliable workforce that’s affordable. Lastly, don't forget about local regulations and taxes, which can vary widely and impact your operating costs. In addition to these factors, think about the availability of infrastructure and technology. A location with good internet connectivity and energy supply will support the implementation of advanced warehousing solutions like automation and real-time tracking. Moreover, consider the potential for future expansion. It’s always smart to plan for growth, ensuring the chosen site can accommodate your needs as your business scales. By carefully weighing these factors, you can select a warehouse location that boosts efficiency, cuts costs, and sets your business up for long-term success.
