I also thank the company board of directors for keeping our heading true with the vision to be one of the leading international provider of qualified Filipino seafarers and excellent manning services by 2028. At present, the business growth of the company remains at a very healthy rate of 14% and indications show that this bullish trend will continue until the end of the year. The secret to our current success is not much of a secret. We keep our agile focus on strategic recruitment, development and promotion of homegrown Filipino crew as well as the continuous upskilling of shore staff and the technical enhancement of work facilities. Manning operations is a VUCA business. It is volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous. We are in a situation of constant, unpredictable change that is now the norm of our industry. The The Mission to Seafarers have released the results of the latest Seafarers Happiness Index and they show a drop in seafarer happiness for a fourth concecutive quarter. This has raised serious concerns about conditions for all those working at sea, who have expressed that they are feeling overburdened, underappreciated and disconnected. Seafarers have also highlighted concerns over a lack of shore leave and an inability to contact family. The Mission to Seafraers is continuing to work with partners from across the shipping industry, including Inmarsat, to tackle the issues that continue to affect the wellbeing of seafarers. Until every person knows and understands what seafarers do, what it means to them and of the value inherent within that, then all our arguments, impassioned pleas and posturing are for nought. We have to be bold, strong and willing to draw our battleline...starting with the premise that seafarers are the most valuable workforce on the planet. Today is International Day of the Seafarer. It is absolutely imperative that we remember and appreciate those who spend their lives at sea keeping global trade moving. Over 90% of everything that you are currently using, eating, enjoying has travelled on a vessel at some point in its life. And yet, seafarers are so often out of sight and out of mind. Abandoned, made to work in appalling conditions with pitiful salaries and with little or no communication with their families. You may think this is happening in parts of the world far away from your home but this happens in every region around the globe including NW Europe. How many of you holiday on cruise liners in absolute luxury yet would rather be unemployed than work for the conditions that many crew have? How many of you go to work knowing you will likely go home at the end of your working day? To return safe to your families. Seafarers do not have that luxury, they are used as pawns in political games, seen as necessary collateral damage in conflicts that have nothing to do with them, their country of origin and those they work for. They did not join the military knowing they could be sent to combat zones but here we are with seafarers being murdered by ‘state’ sanctioned activities. Unscrupulous operators, adverse weather, piracy and risk of imprisonment without trial. These are real and constant occurrences every day for seafarers. There are a lot of blue chip operators with very high crew welfare programs and standards, but unfortunately there are far more that don’t. So on a day where we remember seafarers, take a moment to think about how your car, the breakfast on your table, your electronic devices and your clothes reached you. Consider the hardships endured by those who got them to you. And give thanks for “those that go down to the sea in ships, That do business in great waters”.
