The government can play a crucial role in overcoming street slaughtering by enacting and enforcing laws and regulations, establishing modern slaughterhouses, and licencing and regulating slaughterhouses. Additionally, awareness campaigns and education can inform consumers about the risks of street slaughtering and the benefits of using licensed slaughterhouses. Supporting the poultry industry through subsidies, tax incentives, and training programs can also improve the quality and safety of chicken meat. Collaboration with stakeholders, monitoring and surveillance, and providing alternative livelihoods for street slaughterers can further help to prevent street slaughtering. Encouraging private sector investment and international collaboration and support can also contribute to a safe and hygienic meat supply chain. By taking these steps, the government can help to improve food safety and animal welfare, and promote a more sustainable and hygienic meat supply chain. pakistan food authority has to play role in bringing safe chicken to its consumers

Recent updates from Morrisons have established new parameters for the stocking density of their own-brand chicken, now targeting 30kg/sqm. This adjustment is part of an ongoing evolution in industry practices concerning poultry welfare. It is crucial to analyse the implications of such modifications from a consumer perspective and its potential influence on producers and the broader poultry industry. For consumers, this change in stocking density may inform their purchasing decisions, highlighting a shift towards consideration of welfare standards in production practices. It presents an opportunity to observe how changes in production standards could influence consumer preferences and market demand, without implying a direct correlation with product quality or ethical considerations. From a producer’s standpoint, these evolving standards necessitate a re-evaluation of current practices, potentially influencing future strategies to align with market trends. This situation underscores the significance of industry adaptation to changing consumer awareness and regulatory standards regarding animal welfare. The dialogue between consumer expectations and industry practices is crucial for shaping the future landscape of poultry production. It reflects a broader trend towards transparency and consideration of welfare in the food production sector. This development invites stakeholders across the poultry industry to consider the implications of such welfare standards on operational, ethical, and economic levels. It encourages a balanced discussion on how to meet these evolving standards while addressing the needs and expectations of the consumer market. #PoultryWelfareStandards #ConsumerBehaviour #IndustryAdaptation #PoultryProduction

It's welcome news that the Government is going to consult on clearer food labelling. Greater transparency on animal products to enable consumers to make an informed choice about what they buy is much needed. Clearer labelling on imported food to indicate whether UK welfare standards are met could be a lifeline to British farmers who could be at risk by being undercut by cheaper, lower welfare products. Any labelling system must also provide clear information regarding the method of production, so consumers can understand how the animal was cared for. https://lnkd.in/eevNxjDK

🐥Debeaking is a common method used in the poultry industry to tackle issues like feather pecking, cannibalism, and aggression among birds. It involves trimming or removing part of a chicken's beak to lessen the severity of injuries that can occur from these behaviors. 🐤Now, debeaking is a bit of a touchy subject. Some worry it might cause pain and stress for the birds, while others argue it's necessary for keeping the flock healthy and minimizing injuries. But there are alternatives in the works! Things like enriching the chickens' environment, giving them the right nutrition, and even selecting calmer chicken breeds can help cut down on aggression without resorting to debeaking. 👍Learn about the pros and cons of beak trimming in poultry, including chicken welfare, feather pecking, cannibalism, and alternative methods for flock management in our latest blog post https://lnkd.in/dNE3KBkD Shop all your farm need on www.afrimash.com

In light of the UK's initiative on mandatory country of origin and welfare labelling for poultry meat and eggs, a pertinent discussion emerges: the challenge of label space. Regulatory requirements already limit space on labels, pushing essential consumer information into a tight corner. When prioritising messages from most to least important to consumers, basic and legacy attributes often take precedence, leaving scant room for new attributes deemed important. This raises a critical question for academic discourse: In the hierarchy of label information, who decides which attributes are prioritised and why? Let's delve into this discussion. #LabelTransparency #ConsumerBehaviour #FoodLabelling #SustainableEating #UKFoodPolicy

A recent study published by AVEC EU Poultry analyses the additional costs and likely implications of adopting the Better Chicken Commitment (https://lnkd.in/eEiNQXcq "BCC"). The study finds that fully transitioning to BCC standards would result in: 🐔 An additional production cost of 37.5% per kilogram of meat 🐔 35.4% increase in water consumption, equating to an additional 12.44 million cubic meters annually 🐔 35.5% increase in feed consumption, amounting to an additional 7.3 million tonnes 🐔 24.4% rise in greenhouse gas emissions per kilogram of meat produced 🐔 A reduction of 44% in the total meat produced compared to standard production methods at present in existing EU growing space (>30kg/m²) 🐔 The necessity to construct 9,692 new poultry houses, with an estimated cost of €8.24 billion, to maintain current production levels This ‘Race for Space’ is being severely hampered by the ability to obtain planning consent for poultry developments especially on greenfield sites. Ultimately, we think this will mean that good quality poultry farms will be highly sought after. It certainly does need an overhaul of the current system to make meaningful changes to the industry. #AnimalWelfare #PoultryIndustry #EuropeanChickenCommitment
