Every Thursday, I attend a boxing class at Gloveworx in Santa Monica. The trainers are professional boxers. I'm a serious athlete, but these guys are next level. A few weeks ago, one invited me for their Friday morning run, 6 miles at 4:30 am. I saw this as a huge honor that they would consider me worthy of training with them. To bring me into their world, not just as a client, but as a training partner. I was blocks behind them by the end of it, but I still finished. The mutual respect we had for each other grew that day. Theirs for me because I stepped into their world and didn't quit, and mine for them because I got to experience the depth of their suffering. By suffering, I mean the work we all do to improve ourselves, to put food on the table, and to achieve our goals. What we are willing to suffer through consistently defines us as people and determines our futures. Every doctor shared the suffering of medical school, residency, and endless nights of studying. Every lawyer shared the suffering of law school. Every athlete shares the suffering of endless hours of practice and physical training. Suffering is not meaningless; those who choose to suffer for their goals reap the rewards of it. This new year, don't just set resolutions. Think about what you want to suffer through, visualize it, embrace it, see who it'll transform you into, and take the first step.
