The PolyExpert • Polyethylene Films team attended the 27th Global Pouch Forum (BNP Media) in Clearwater, May 29-31, 2024. We presented a high-barrier monomaterial recyclable pouch with 30% FDA-compliant post-consumer recycled (PCR) resin. This breakthrough was made possible thanks to Henkel, who used one of their recyclable high-barrier coatings on one of our matte printing films. Until collection for flexible packaging recycling becomes a reality in North America, PolyExpert continues to develop sustainable monomaterial films for the creation of recyclable flexible packaging. We are exploring the different technologies available: PE films as sealant webs and print webs, PE films using recyclable high-barrier resins or EVOH with compatibilizer, and now films with high-barrier coatings. We do our utmost to ensure that the material used in our films does not become waste but a source of material, in a world where flexible packaging is set to be used even more for essential applications. PLA, a plastic made from plants like corn starch, is shaking things up in the plastics world! It's a much greener choice than traditional plastics based on fossil fuels. Making PLA involves turning starch into a substance called lactic acid, and then linking those molecules together to form the final plastic. This "plant-based plastic" is not only good for the environment, but it also breaks down naturally, making it ideal for things like food packaging, 3D printing, clothes, and even medical tools. While it's still not as widely used as traditional plastics (2.8 million tons in 2023 compared to a whopping 367 million), PLA is growing super fast at 20-30% each year. Sure, there are still some cost and infrastructure challenges, but with more research and a push towards sustainability, this groundbreaking bioplastic has a bright future! To produce high-quality packaging for the European food industry, processors, besides having efficient means of production, must more than ever be prepared to break new ground. The requirements of the EU Plastics Pact are ambitious: By 2030, all plastic packaging must be 100 % recyclable and contain at least 30 % recycled material. “rPET” is the highly promising response to this challenge, which the partner companies Engel, Alpla, Brink, IPB Printing and Intopack have tried and tested in practice. You can read the full article at (P+): https://lnkd.in/dtTCVskH Text: Dipl. Ing. Alternative of Shrink Pack Collation : Hug & Hold Packs Introducing the future of sustainable packaging - Hug & Hold packs by Mondi Group! This innovative solution offers a complete paper-based sleeve and carrier concept to replace collation shrink film for PET bottles. With the potential of reducing carbon footprint by 35%. Hug & Hold packs consist of a corrugated handle and a 100% Kraft paper-made sleeve that is recyclable and made from renewable materials. The glued sleeves keep the bottles upright and hold them together during transit, making it easy to handle for consumers. This sustainable solution has already been implemented by Coca-Cola, Fanta, Sprite, and Mezzo mix brands, proving its reliability and effectiveness. The printing technologies used for handles range from offset to high-quality post-print and standard flexo for sleeves. Not only is it environmentally friendly, but it's also easy to dispose of. The end-of-life assumptions calculations for paper/paperboard are better than plastics, making it a great choice! #packaging #sustainability #recycling #technology #innovation #environmentallyfriendly #printing #packingsolutions

🌱 As we are coming towards the last month of the project, let's take a moment to revisit the various applications of PHA materials in the nenu2PHAr project: 🍽️Food Packaging: We have developed environmentally conscious flat film, which is further thermoformed into stand-up pouches for dry food and plastic cups, providing both product preservation and compostability, thereby minimizing environmental impact. 💄 Cosmetic Packaging: A roll-on type of packaging for liquid cosmetics, predominantly used for antiperspirant, offers a versatile application with a set comprising a bottle, screw-on closure, and ball for precise dosing and application on the skin. 🖨️ 3D Printing Filament: Development of compostable biobased filaments with comparable size to current ones, suitable processability, heat resistance and good mechanical properties. 🏥 Medical Device: Advantages of PHA for textiles are its tunable biodegradability, biocompatibility and mechanical properties similar to the fossil-based polypropylene. PHA filaments and yarns could therefore be of interest for a range of textile applications such as agrotextiles, 3D printing filaments, medical filaments and wipes, etc. 🧵 Agrotextile: PHA-based compostable agrotextiles offer an attractive solution to reduce weeding and improve soil biodegradation, countering the prevalent environmental contamination caused by non-biodegradable fossil-based alternatives used in both professional and private markets.
