Just out a policy note from The World Bank on policies to Improve the environmental performance of road vehicles in the Western Balkans (WeBa). This is available here: https://lnkd.in/ejPEUCYn Here we suggest evidence-based policy actions that can, at once: i) address and manage environmental, energy security, and affordability impacts of existing vehicles, taking into account fiscal considerations; ii) steer new vehicle integrations in the existing fleet, including in particular secondh and vehicle imports, towards better environmental and energy efficiency; iii) enable countries in the WeBa to embrace e-mobility; iv) ensure that the transition to e-mobility is socially and economically inclusive; and v) support the EU accession process by converging with the relevant acquis communautaire. The publication of this follows an engagement process that started in 2022 and continued in 2023, involving great colleagues, including in particular Ramon Munoz Raskin, Gregoire Gauthier, Eduardo Espitia and Aleix Pons. Importantly, I think quite a few of the ideas that we developed while working on this can be inspirational also for other emerging economies looking into solutions to the challenges that we tried to address.
