"Because trust-based philanthropy calls on organizations to align their values to culture and structures as much as it does to their grantmaking practices, taking a trust-based approach often requires foundation boards to also reorient their purpose and areas of focus. As a guide for boards on this reframe, this resource outlines the four, non-mutually exclusive focal points—learning, strategy, grantmaking, and imagination—in which foundation boards can direct their time and attention when stewarding trust-based organizations."

I'd like to recommend, once again, to mid-size nonprofit leaders in San Diego to consider working with SVP on their strategic plan. There was no cost to work with them, just our commitment to prioritize this work. It took a lot of my time, but I saw the SVP volunteers put in as much time as I did and I wasn't going to let them down. I did not realize what a unique opportunity it would be to work with corporate leaders experienced in strategic planning. Their way of thinking about growth was very different than mine. As a nonprofit leader, I'm reminded almost on a daily basis that we have limited resources and capacity. It's hard to think about growth when you are focused on your current limitations. The new strategic plan doubles our budget in the next five years. We have a road plan with 14 goals, 23 initiatives all with metrics, and a budget. We plan to present this to our community partners and ask them to also stretch as they invest in our impactful organization. We'll see how it goes. I'll keep you posted. Why strategic planning? Because as the saying goes, if you don't know where you are going, any road will take you there. #strategicplanning #nonprofits #nonprofitleadership
Earlier this year, MANA de San Diego came to SVP ready to chart its future path. Equally as excited about the road ahead, funders were asking "Where was MANA going in the next five years? How would the nonprofit continue to grow its impact in the community?" An SVP team of Partners, including Lead Lisa Davidson, Susanne Chakravarty, and Steve Ness helped to answer these questions, and more, as they supported MANA's leadership in developing a five year strategic plan. "It's a bold new way of thinking about impact and growth," shared Executive Director Inez González Perezchica, Ed.D. Read more on the blog.
