Last week, Nightline aired an episode on Super Fakes (you can also check out a Impact x Nightline's 30 minute episode by the same title on Hulu). In the piece, they quoted a study from Michigan State University that counterfeiters are trying to normalize the stigma of owning counterfeits! 🤯 They do this, by using influencers to sell their super fakes! And this does not make the super fakes any more legit. It just means, we have to prosecute the influencers too! In the piece, they talk about how counterfeit goods and stolen cultural artifacts have a direct link to terrorism. When asked to supply evidence of counterfeits to terrorism in the U.S., CBP cited the 1993 attack on the World Trade Center as an example. Further, weapons from the 2015 attack on Charlie Hebdo was financed in part by the sale of fake Nike sneakers. Technology is making the rise of super fakes more prevalent, and the key to stopping counterfeits is for the manufacturers to train CBP on how to spot the difference. Want to learn more? Stacey, thank you for sharing the concerning details about the Nightline episode on "Super Fakes" and the efforts by counterfeiters to normalize the stigma around owning counterfeit goods, often through the use of influencers. This is a serious issue with far-reaching implications beyond just intellectual property violations. The links between the counterfeit trade and financing of terrorist activities, as evidenced by examples like the 1993 World Trade Center attack and the 2015 Charlie Hebdo attack, are alarming. It underscores the grave consequences of what may seem like a victimless crime on the surface. You make an excellent point about the need for manufacturers to actively train customs and border protection (CBP) officials on how to spot the differences between genuine and counterfeit products. As technology advances, counterfeiters are becoming more sophisticated, making it increasingly challenging to identify "super fakes" without specialized knowledge and training. A powerful thought that emerges from this situation is the importance of collective responsibility and collaboration in combating the counterfeit trade. It is not solely the responsibility of law enforcement or manufacturers but a shared obligation that requires a multi-faceted approach involving: 1. Public awareness campaigns to educate consumers about the ethical, economic, and security implications of purchasing counterfeit goods, effectively countering the normalization efforts by counterfeiters. 2. Stronger legal consequences and prosecution of influencers and individuals complicit in promoting or selling counterfeit products, as well as those directly involved in the counterfeiting operations. 3. Increased investment in training and resources for law enforcement agencies and border protection to enhance their ability to identify and intercept counterfeit goods, leveraging the expertise of manufacturers and industry professionals. 4. International cooperation and intelligence sharing among law enforcement agencies, as the counterfeit trade often involves transnational criminal networks with global reach. 5. Technological advancements in product authentication and traceability, making it increasingly difficult for counterfeiters to replicate genuine products and easier for authorities to identify and seize illicit goods. By addressing this issue through a multi-pronged approach involving stakeholders from various sectors, we can effectively combat the counterfeit trade, disrupt its links to terrorism and organized crime, and protect consumers, businesses, and society at large from the far-reaching consequences of this illegal and unethical practice.

The gun culture is seemingly popular on social media in India. Decode tracked some pages and their creators. On multiple Facebook groups, accounts claimed to sell weapons, each with phone numbers. Decode reached out to three of them. The individuals behind all three phone numbers confirmed that they sell weapons and sent photos of guns along with prices to the reporter.
