Golf - The Evolving Business Model. The men's professional game of #golf continues to be as divided as many of the stakeholders in the US political arena. We saw it yet again this past weekend, when one of the games showcase events "The Masters" was played at Augusta in Georgia, USA. Broadcasters seemingly, and incredibly unprofessionally, went out of their way to discredit the presence of the #LIVGolf league players who were in attendance along with their #PGATour colleagues over the course of the week. All of the sly and sarcastic interludes throughout the broadcast did not get lost on the fans of the game, as the internet lit up as if it were some kind of heated debate between passionate #Democrats and #Republicans. #PGA pundits making sly remarks about the LIV players not being able to manage playing 72 holes over the week, because the rival LIV tournaments are played over 54 holes over three days. This got me thinking. Who actually invented the concept of 18 holes for a round of golf, and how did 72 holes become the 'norm" for a golf tournament? Well you might be surprised to learn that at the traditional home of golf, St Andrews in #Scotland, the course originally consisted of 22 holes. 11 holes out, and 11 holes back in. This was later shortened when holes were merged together. Yet back then there was no standard, some tournaments even featured courses that had just 12 holes. It's when we jump back over the Atlantic once again to understand that The Masters tournament was originally played over eighteen holes over three days, eighteen holes were played each day for the first two days, and then a final 36 holes were played on the third day. Co-founder of 'The Masters" , Amateur golfer Bobby Jones suggested that the tournament should be played over four days so more tickets could be sold, and other events could be built around the week, so it was born, the concept, and norm that a golf tournament was to be played over eighteen holes over the course of four straight days. Other major tournaments followed suit such as 'The Open' and the 'PGA Championships'. In June 2021 the disruptors came into the game, the LIV Golf league. LIV introduced three day and fifty four hole tournaments. Ever since then the internal flames on mens professional golf has become an out of control wildfire. Players, fans and administrators are all embroiled in a never ending circus that started in 2021, over 250 years after the game was invented. The question is, when will the adults enter the room and realize that for mens professional golf to prosper the ego's need to be put aside so that the sustainable future of the game can be created which for now, is the only thing that matters. The only thing that matters.

Donald Trump should challenge Joe Biden to a round of golf instead, eighteen holes, head-to-head, match play, mano a mano, winner take all — or almost all. There would still be an election, of course. But surely the winner of the golfing tournament, called the Presidential Save Democracy Open, would surely have an edge going down the stretch or fairway. Or it could be called the Geezer Golf Open since Trump is 77 and Biden is 81. Either way, the idea of the two elderly golfing presidents facing off against each other surfaced after Biden mocked Trump for bragging about winning two club championships at the International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, which Trump happens to own. “I won both,” Trump trumpeted. Biden snidely commented, “Congratulations, Donald. Quite the accomplishment.” This led golfing critics to sarcastically ask, “If you can’t win playing at a golf club you own, where can you win? What was left out of the story was that critics said that Trump won those club trophies playing by himself. Trump, who plays golf all the time at one of the golf clubs he owns, is no duffer, though. “Duffer,” a derogatory golf label, is a name he would reserve for Biden — like “Sleepy Joe” and “Crooked Joe.” Now Trump would call him “Duffer Joe.” Besides, Biden does not play nearly enough golf as Trump, except when Hunter Biden needs him to fill out a foursome of business partners with no one around to shout “fore.” Of course, there would have to be certain rules agreed upon, like the site of the match, before the event could be held. The pair could play at the neutral and iconic Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Ga., where the Master’s Tournament is played annually. Trump would be safe there since it is outside of Fulton County, where troubled District Attorney Fani Willis is trying to prosecute him on election interference charges. However, given Willis’ bizarre testimony and unusual prosecutorial behavior, it is more likely that she will be standing trial before Trump does. Another rule concerns the use of golf carts and who drives them. While professional golfers and their caddies walk the course, you cannot expect Trump and Biden to follow suit. Biden can barely make it to his helicopter. The course, after all, hitting from the back tees is 7,475 yards or 4.25 miles long. It is shorter hitting from the ladies tees. And while the older Biden could request to hit from the ladies’ tees, it is something that Trump would never agree with, let alone hit from them himself, despite risking the women’s vote. It is a

Golf Operations & Sales at Westport Golf Club. Weekly golf columnist with the Connaught Telegraph & TikTok contributor.
2024 will be more interesting than normal. Well lads, it all kicks off again next Thursday with the opening event on the 2024 PGA Tour taking place in Hawaii. A who’s who will come under starters orders and golf fans will be able to discuss some actual golf as opposed to the multitude of topics that although may be of some relevance to the top players in the world doesn’t affect the normal club golfer. In summary it will be nice to see some actual action with the majority of both Italian Ryder Cup teams participating. From a domestic point of view there will be huge interest in the fortunes of Ludvig Åberg and Viktor Hovland who as of yet have not been approached by dark side or at least have advised Mr. Norman and Co. that tradition is more important to them, rather than turning up to play a pro-celebrity version of their beautiful game. The prediction matrix is a classic for golf fans in January and with no form to go on one should participate for amusement value only and not fall into the trap of putting hard cash where your mouth is. If 2023 told us anything about the Majors, it was that each of the 4 events is a lottery and there is seldom a clear favourite. The only new caveat to the most common question in golf is that those who play the 54-hole version don’t seem to be at a disadvantage when the Majors are up for grabs. On a personal level as usual I’ll be monitoring Rory’s play from behind the couch at each of the events but don’t anticipate him adding to the four Majors he already has. My view of the season will be blinkered by the European’s overall performance, and I hope to see at least 2 Majors fall under the European flag of 12 golden stars. For those of you who don’t understand the concept of been a member of a club and just want to stick to playing with you normal fourball, not supporting club competitions, complaining about the most minor of inconveniences, avoiding the club bar and restaurant and generally not adding to the club vibe, allow me to encourage you to at least participate in one club activity this year. Please pay your annual subscription as quickly as possible by either signing up to the direct debit facility or dropping into the club office this week. Even more importantly for those of you in bigger clubs that may have a waiting list; if you don’t intend re-joining just let somebody know so that the person on the waiting list can be in receipt of a late Christmas gift. Another underutilised habit that is very common is most golf clubs is an unwillingness to take a pre-season golf lesson with your local club professional. Don’t wait till talk of the Masters and no relief for club competitions. Contact your local professional and get them to have a look at the weakest part of your game. Happy New Year.

The Golfing Pyramid has gained a lot of traction over the past few weeks, driven by comments from Rory McIlroy first mentioning an "IPL style" model before pivoting towards the "Champions League style" model. https://lnkd.in/eAqnur5W There's no doubt bringing the top players together at the top of the game can create more value in the whole golf ecosystem but what model would you choose? A number of important questions remain if Golf is to use this time to unlock it's full potential. What tour is the top of the pyramid? Does a new tour need to be created? Are tours happy being feeder tours? How could scheduling work? What format should the events at the top of the game be and should they all be the same? Should they involve teams? How can this inspire and link to grassroots golf? The next few months could be extremely interesting. If you are interested, or have any particularly strong opinions on the strategy for the top of the sport then I would love to have a chat.

Women’s golf fandom is growing rapidly across the world — there are more Americans playing golf than ever, especially women and girls. 📈 • The men’s and women’s biennial golf tournaments (usually taking place in alternate years) posted big business wins, and the Solheim Cup seems poised to putt the women's game on a new level. 🏌️♀️ • Last month’s women's tourney in Spain set its own share of viewership and attendance records thanks to three years of event promotion. By January, the Solheim Cup had already exceeded $126.8M in media impact, sold more than 50% of its tickets, and sold out the Solheim Pavilion. Believe the hype. 💰 • The cup broke several viewership records on Sky Sports, peaking at 734K viewers. While local proximity does entice fans, tickets bought by Americans tripled from 2% to 6% compared to previous years held in Europe. 👀 • The 2024 Solheim Cup in Virginia should capitalize on this increasing interest. As more fans in Europe and the U.S. tune into women’s golf, they’ll take sides in one of the game’s greatest rivalries. A real tee party. ⛳
