Fundraisers, is there anything better than asking supporters why they care about the mission of your organization? For me, hands down, there is nothing more fulfilling that hearing a donor share about their "why", and how they see our work as worthy of their gift of time or treasure. You might go into a meeting hoping to learn more about them but come out reminded of why you wake up everyday and do what you do. Of course, we also need to be asking lots of other questions, like: - How well do we communicate the impact of your gift? - Are we maintaining a high level of transparency about funding? - How can we be responsive to a need you see in our community? So many great conversations to be had, if we'll take the time to listen and engage our community of support, no matter the level of giving.

Next week, November 28, the Wisconsin Institute for Public Policy and Service (WIPPS) will be celebrating #GivingTuesday - a day for people around the world to come together to thank, help, give, show kindness, and share what they have with those in need. Created in 2012, GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement, unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world. Over the last 11 years, this idea has grown into a year-round global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity. Harnessing the power of people, organizations, and collaboration to transform and enhance communities is what we are all about at WIPPS. Since 2007, WIPPS has been committed to addressing local, state, and national issues by linking public scholarship, civic outreach, and student service to enhance community life throughout Wisconsin. We can’t do this important work without your help! Your donation to WIPPS will provide much needed support to programs that educate and engage residents of Wisconsin, develop future leaders, and help communities meet identified needs. But you don’t need to wait until next week to contribute. Avoid the Thanksgiving and holiday rush and give today. One minute is all it takes to make a difference. https://wipps.org/donate/

You really SHOULD NOT be listening to volunteers for this one. A study by Miller and Ratner shows that people often assume others are more driven by self-interest than they actually are. This skews our nonprofit fundraising strategies, if you're involving volunteers (which is a good thing!) When asking volunteers for fundraising ideas, they gravitate to methods like bake sales or gala tickets, assuming these appeal to others' self-interest. They miss more effective approaches based on how humans actually behave. We need a bold shift in our strategy: guiding volunteers towards more impactful, less transactional fundraising methods. Here is the article: Miller, D. T., & Ratner, R. K. (1998). The disparity between the actual and assumed power of self-interest. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 74(1), 53–62.

Mark your calendars, we are 12 days away from Giving Tuesday! For those of you who are unfamiliar with Giving Tuesday, it is a day the whole world comes together to give back in many different ways: through acts of kindness, gifts of voice, time, talent, or treasure. Nonprofits can leverage the energy of Giving Tuesday to tell their stories, engage lifelong advocates, and build an active community to support their missions. This year Giving Tuesday is on Tuesday, November 28, 2023. There are a few things that you can do to have an impact for NOVA-FR on this important day. First, make a gift yourself! You can do this by mailing a check to our NOVA-FR offices at 10535 Battleview Parkway, Manassas, VA 20109 or you can go online and make your gift using a credit card. If your company matches your giving, don’t forget to fill out the appropriate to make your gift have more impact. Second, post this on social media on Monday, November 27:

Championing generosity and foresight as a Planned Giving Director 🌿 | Committed to helping donors create enduring legacies that shape tomorrow's world 🌎 PhilanthropyLeader #LegacyPlanning
In the development field, it's common to encounter individuals who "coast" in their roles. Many organizations lack effective measures to address under-performance. However, as a frontline fundraiser, whether in major gifts or planned giving, it's essential to consistently drive progress. Remember, the names and numbers in your database represent donors with unique stories. Building genuine connections with them is crucial to making successful asks and achieving your goals.
