Did you know that one in five children in the U.S. experience food insecurity? For kids that rely on free or reduced-priced meals at school, summer can mean a lack of access to nutritious food. That’s why we’ve joined the Albertsons Companies Foundation in a groundbreaking coalition to tackle summer hunger through the USDA’s new Summer EBT program. Partnering with @FeedingAmerica, @FRACtweets, @GiftCardBank, @HungerFreeUSA, @mRelief_form, @nokidhungry, and @PHAnews we’re reaching over 200 foodbanks, 300 school districts, and 1,500 organizations. Eligible families can get $120 per child for groceries. Check if you qualify at SummerEBT.org.

NEWS: Del Monte Foods, Inc. released a progress update on the first year of the "Nourishing Families by Nourishing Schools" program, a collaborative initiative launched in 2022 dedicated to enhancing the physical, mental, and social-emotional well-being of children. In year one, our partnership has: - Reached 1.25 million families with family-oriented nutritious and easy recipes and activities to foster community and connection through meals - Engaged more than two million children at nearly 4,700 K-12 schools with program content - Ensured inclusive reach with 67 percent of the students and families reached to date representing BIPOC populations and 75 percent of schools and districts reached serving under-resourced communities through Title I funding. Summer is finally here! For children facing food insecurity, summer break creates uncertainty. During the school year, many students throughout Southern Colorado receive free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch at school. When school ends for the summer, so do these meals. Eliminating summer hunger is no small challenge, but our team of Partner Food Pantries and Direct Service Sites is increasing food distributions so kids like Daniella can spend more time playing, growing, and creating lasting memories -- like eating lots of Daniella's favorite, strawberries! Hunger never takes a break––and neither does our mission to end it for kids. It’s a passion that drives our partnerships with West Michigan community heroes like Hand2Hand as they strive to eliminate the 68-hour nutrition gap each weekend presents for many children. According to Feeding America West Michigan, one in eight kids faces hunger––that’s nearly 65,000 students in West Michigan or roughly 834 full school buses! While breakfast and lunch may be served at school through national programs, access to healthy meals often stops when children are dropped off at home on Friday afternoon. That’s when Hand2Hand steps in. This organization mobilizes schools, churches, people and businesses like Amway to pack and distribute backpacks brimming with nutritious food like three breakfast items, four snacks and three-to-four lunch and dinner options, often with a recipe. One backpack at a time, this community powerhouse secured more than 4 million food items valued at $2 million to support nearly 15,000 students at 280 schools in 44 West Michigan districts. And that’s just last school year! More hands means more impact. In 2023, Amway invested $2.8 million to benefit more than 100 nonprofit champions like Hand2Hand right here in West Michigan, where we first put down roots. Supporting the communities where we do business has always been at the heart of our story. When school’s out, will healthy meals for our kids go with it? This summer, families across NYC will see their pandemic-era food benefits begin to expire. These benefits historically covered meal costs for families whose students received free meals at school. At Children's Aid, we know that youth flourish in school and in life when they grow up healthy and strong. Securing access to nutritional meals for our students and their families is a critical component of building resilient communities and helping children reach their full potential. Under the new Summer EBT program, most eligible families will receive funds to cover their meals for the summer automatically, no application is necessary. Over the past few visits to The Gatjie the 2 questions that comes our way from the children & teens on almost every visit is – are you handing out food?....did you bring food? It's been years since the food situation has been this bad. Kids are telling us that they haven't eaten in days, that they went to school hungry (before holidays) & that their stomach hurts because of the “hungry cramp” (as the kids call it) & this is only getting worse as the days & weeks go by. You can't ask or even expect local council to do anything because they don't lift a finger unless there is a camera present for photo opportunities or a chance to be seen by the local bulletins. The issue of children going hungry is just another thing on their list of things to do that never get done. If you don't believe me simply ask the community, the extreme lack of trust in local council is evident. There are a handful of church groups that hand out fresh produce & loaves of bread but on occasion not everyone gets. It is often a case of first come, first served. I distinctly remember one of our hot food hand outs we did a few weeks ago, we handed out cooked food hours after a church group had handed out produce & bread & the majority of the children & teens told us that they were still hungry & they came back for 2nd & even 3rd helpings during our hand out. When a 5 year old child says – Uncle Dylan pick me up – and you do so & you can hear his stomach rumbling, it is one of the saddest sounds to hear. Unfortunately there is no quick fix solution to this problem. The cost of living is rising every week, the cost of food is increasing weekly. There are food hand outs that don't take place anymore. The quantities that the other community groups hand out is diminishing monthly. I am forever grateful that when Cope with Hope does a hot food hand out we are fortunate enough to be able to serve nutritious & filling food with bread which always helps. With the need for food becoming greater I am making it a priority for Cope to feed the community as often as possible without overwhelming my team in any way #communitybuilding #forthekids #copewithhope #hunger
