Ever reach a goal like getting a promotion or landing a job, and then think “is this all there is?” I’ve been there too many times, where I’m obsessing about reaching the end of a goal, as oppose to enjoying the process along the way… Always fooling myself into thinking that the next goal will be different. We think a career should give us everything: money, relationships, purpose, and passion. We jump from company to company, hunting for the “dream job” that will tick off all of our boxes. But no job can give us everything. And there is so much more to a balanced life than a career. When it comes to our careers, it’s easy to fall into a scarcity mindset and think: “All of the good jobs are taken.” “There’s so many other people more talented than I am.” “Maybe I should just lower my expectations.” When I was laid off last year, I was plagued by all sorts of these limiting beliefs. But everything started to change after I let go of the thought that the world was full of limitations — and instead, I started to believe and act as if there was a world of limitless possibilities out there for me. And I began to practice believing in my own potential to attract and achieve the opportunities that I truly wanted. And I started to envision that the career I truly wanted was already here. It didn’t happen on its own. And the journey was filled with constant speed bumps. But incredible things happen when we let go of this scarcity mindset that weighs us down — and instead, we dream big, think abundantly, and believe that there is a world of limitless opportunities out there waiting for us to uncover them. #mindsetmonday #mindsetgrowth #careerdevelopment #careerguidance #positivepsychology #inspiration

A few months ago, I was laid off from my job at BetterUp — shortly after my family and I had officially closed and were moving into a new house… Now I was on the hook for two mortgages without an income… I was facing the very real prospect of going into bankruptcy… and I was overwhelmed by the fear that I would no longer be able to provide for my family. Not to mention navigating the Maui wildfires which devastated much of our community — and on top of that being in the midst of moving with two small children. I thought to myself: - What if I can’t find another job? - What if I lose this house? - What if I fail to provide for my family? - Why did this happen to me? Then I remembered that the quality of my life will come down to the quality of questions that I ask myself — especially during this time of crisis. And I started to change my self talk and the questions I was focusing on. I started to think: - How do I use that experience as a launching pad for something even greater and more exciting? - How do I use this as an opportunity to show my family what I’m truly capable of? - What would excite me in this next chapter of life? - What if this happened to me so I could spend more time with my kids before jumping to another job? Just by asking different questions — everything started to change. I went from feeling fearful to feeling hopeful. I went from being anxious about the future to being excited about it. I went from feeling like I was a victim in the situation — to feeling like I was the captain of my own destiny. So what happened in the time that I was laid off? - I spent so much quality time with my kids as we moved into the new house. - I became a landlord and found an amazing family as tenants for my previous property. - I met awesome teams and had great conversations as I started interviewing. - I became the Head of Design at a non-profit startup (more on that another time). So if you’re going through a hard time — or if you’re currently navigating a layoff – I know how you feel, and just know that: The quality of our lives comes down to the quality of questions that we ask ourselves. And every difficult situation has the opportunity for something positive to come from it. #layoffs #positivemindset

Feeling stuck in a passionless job? Want to make a career pivot but unsure how to make the leap? I know exactly how you feel. When I studied finance and briefly worked at a hedge fund in NYC, I felt passionless. Soul-less. I felt anxious that I had made the wrong career decision. Can you relate?
