AT&T inter-carrier problems in the USA today - AT&T nation-wide issues calling users on other carriers.. 911 impacts.. FCC investigating. I'll have some general comments on this USA based failure event and other recent US and Canadian carrier outages coming in my upcoming whitepaper on PSBN policy alternatives for Canada's 911 and First Responder telecommunications systems. Per Downdetector.com it seems like today's AT&T failure event had a ~7hr outage from ~12:00PM to ~7:45PM Eastern Time. Some confusion was reported regarding 911 calling due to faulty SMS texts during the event erroneously claiming that 911 dialing was impacted. Also concerning, some 911 First Responder agencies with FirstNet were also apparently impacted by these AT&T problems - such as this Kansas City-area Sheriffs Office noted in this article.. https://lnkd.in/gB2jSHsm NBC News Article Quote.. "...The disruption occurred a little more than three months after a widespread outage affected AT&T customers, leaving people without service. During that incident, around 50,000 outages were reported at one point. The company said then that problem was caused by a process error. The website Downdetector noted a spike in reported outages for both AT&T and Verizon on Tuesday. T-Mobile said it was not experiencing an outage, but the problems with other carriers might impact its customers trying to connect to other networks." #multicarrier #PSBN #policyalternatives #gracefulfailuremodes #CRTC #ISED #telecommunications #Canada #Ontario #networkofnetworks #lessonslearned #onesizedoesntfitall #alleggsinonebasket #thefutureisnow https://lnkd.in/gwpgA2FG

AT&T cellular phone service outage on Thursday hit thousands of AT&T users in the United States, disrupting calls and text messages as well as emergency services in major cities, including San Francisco. AT&T said some of its customers were facing interruptions and it was "working urgently" to restore service. "We encourage the use of Wi-Fi calling until service is restored," it said. More than 73,000 incidents were reported around 8:15 a.m. ET (1315 GMT), and the outage has lasted at least five hours, according to tracking website Downdetector.com. AT&T, whose shares were down 2.5% in morning trading, is among the dominant telecom operators in the U.S. Its 5G network covers 290 million customers across the country, according to the company's website. The outage has affected people's ability to reach emergency services by dialing 911, according to posts on the X social media platform by government departments in several U.S. cities. "We are aware of an issue impacting AT&T wireless customers from making and receiving any phone calls (including to 911), the San Francisco Fire Department said on X. The Prince William County Police Department in Virginia and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department in North Carolina posted similar statements on the platform. Downdetector showed users of Verizon, T-Mobile and UScellular also faced disruptions. But T-Mobile and Verizon said their network was operating normally and the outage was potentially related to customers trying to connect with other networks. U.S. Senator Rick Scott of Florida said he had reached out to AT&T to get an update on the outage. "Florida law enforcement is doing everything it can to keep people safe, and I expect AT&T to keep us informed on what it is doing to get 911 services fully back online ASAP," he said in a post on X. The Federal Communications Commission did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether it was investigating the outage. In 2021, the regulatory agency settled a probe into a T-Mobile outage during the pandemic that lasted over 12 hours and led to more than 20,000 failed 911 emergency calls for $19.5 million. 🚨 Nationwide AT&T Outage Update 🚨 On February 22, 2024, a widespread outage hit AT&T and other carrier users, causing disruptions in call, text, and internet services across the nation. Tens of thousands of mobile users were affected, prompting emergency and police departments to issue crucial advice for those struggling to reach 911. 📉 Scope of the Outage Around 9 a.m. ET, a staggering 74,000 AT&T customers faced service outages, with the number decreasing to 25,000 by 12:30 p.m. ET as AT&T worked tirelessly to restore its network. Most reported outages were concentrated in major cities like Atlanta, Austin, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Indianapolis, Miami, New York City, and San Antonio. The incident also impacted Cricket Wireless, an AT&T-owned carrier, with 13,500 customers experiencing outages as of 8 a.m. ET. 📱 Impact on Other Carriers While 3,000 Verizon and 1,100 T-Mobile customers reported outages by 7 a.m. Thursday, both telecom giants assured that their networks were operating as normal. They believed the affected users might have been attempting to connect with customers from other carriers. 🚑 Safety Concerns Beyond the inconvenience, the outage raised significant safety concerns, leading emergency responders to provide alternative communication methods. Some cities recommended using Wi-Fi for calls, texting 911, using landlines, turning on Wi-Fi calling, trying non-emergency lines, or borrowing a cellphone from another provider. 🌐 National Response Emergency responders and police departments across various locations, including St. Joseph County, Mich., Cabell County, W Va., Prince William County, Va., San Francisco Fire Department, and Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications, echoed similar advice to residents. 👮♂️ Impact on Emergency Services Some police departments, such as the New York Police Department, faced challenges in taking calls or emails on AT&T phones during the outage, requiring connection to Wi-Fi. In Massachusetts, concerned residents tangled up call lines, emphasizing the widespread impact. 🔄 Restoration Efforts AT&T reported that 75% of its network was restored by 11:15 a.m. ET on the same day. However, the cause of the incident was not specified by the telecom giant. 🌐📱 #ATTOutage #EmergencyResponse #TelecomNews

AT&T’s network went down for many of its customers across the United States Thursday morning, leaving customers unable to place calls, text or access the internet. Although Verizon and T-Mobile customers reported some network outages, too, they appeared far less widespread. T-Mobile said its network was unaffected by AT&T’s service outage and customers reporting outages may have been unable to reach customers who use AT&T. More than 64,000 AT&T customers reported outages on digital-service tracking site DownDetector. That’s not a comprehensive number: It tracks only self-reported outages. Although outage reports fell a bit in the 5 a.m. ET hour, they bounced back in the 7 a.m. ET hour and continue to surge.

Nationwide Cellular Outages Affect AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile and many other Customers. This morning, customers of major cellular providers AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile experienced widespread service outages across the United States. According to Downdetector, over 50,000 AT&T outages were reported around 7 a.m. ET, with significant disruptions in major cities including Houston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, and Atlanta. The number of reported AT&T outages peaked at over 71,000 just before 8 a.m. ET. While Verizon and T-Mobile customers also reported outages, their numbers were considerably lower, with around 3,000 and 1,100 reports, respectively. The cause of the service disruption remains unclear. AT&T acknowledged the issue, stating, “Some of our customers are experiencing wireless service interruptions this morning,” and advised customers to use Wi-Fi calling until service is restored. Verizon noted that the outages were not directly impacting their network but were affecting customers trying to reach other carriers experiencing issues. T-Mobile asserted that their network did not suffer an outage and is operating normally, suggesting that Downdetector’s numbers might reflect customers attempting to reach users on other networks. The outages raised concerns about emergency services, as some customers may have been unable to call 911. Several local emergency departments, including San Francisco’s Fire Department and Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management & Communications, issued advisories for AT&T customers, recommending alternative methods to reach emergency services if needed. This incident highlights the importance of robust and reliable communication infrastructure, especially in emergencies. It also underscores the need for effective contingency plans for individuals and businesses to maintain connectivity during service outages. #technology #tech #internet #infosec #dataprotection #digital

The AT&T network outage last week prevented tens of thousands of subscribers across the US from fully accessing calls, texts, internet, and emergency services such as 911. The company stated “Based on our initial review, we believe that today’s outage was caused by the application and execution of an incorrect process used as we were expanding our network,” The financial cost of such outage goes beyond lost revenue, but could potentially affect share prices and customer retention. Highlighting that even the largest US carrier with robust operations is not immune to downtime. Article 🔗 : https://lnkd.in/dVkJtVtB #attoutage #businesscontinuity #disasterrecovery #riskmanagement
