The arts are fundamental to our humanity. They ennoble and inspire us—fostering creativity, empathy, and beauty. The arts also strengthen our communities socially, educationally, and economically. In Massachusetts, arts and culture is a $27.2 billion industry—4.2% of the state economy—and supports 135,181 jobs (bigger than construction, education, and transportation). The arts accelerate economic recovery: a growth in arts employment has a positive and causal effect on overall employment (U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis). It was 1'sh a.m., way past my usual 9:00 p.m. bedtime, but last night, sleep just wasn't happening. Have you ever felt that mix of excitement and nerves about what's ahead? That's exactly where I am right now. I always thought I had a good grasp on the historical struggles and sacrifices made for freedom and equality. But today, something shifted. As an emerging developer attending the 'Building Small' conference, I found myself in Savannah, Georgia, merely a visitor, touring areas steeped in history, where the legacy of slavery is deeply ingrained. At one point, we stopped at the MLK Memorial in Martin Luther King Park, and it was like nothing I've experienced before. It was as if I could feel the presence of the ancestors, a connection that was almost overwhelming. Their unspoken messages of encouragement and perseverance seemed to fill the air, making me feel like they were saying, "We've been waiting for you." This visit wasn't about my projects or involvement; it was about understanding and respecting the profound legacy of the area. It's given me a deeper perspective on the responsibility we have as developers, not just to build, but to honor and contribute to these communities in meaningful ways. As voting season approaches for indigenous community, notice a growing sense of division murmuring through community, which once stood united in support of one another. In the past, if an elder or mother needed anything, the community rallied together to provide assistance. However, I fear unity has waned due to the historical injustices within the colonized system, where one was forced to fight for meager resources to survive. That era has passed, and it's time to transcend divisions. Instead of pitting one member against another, let us remember our strength lies in unity. As we navigate the intersection of tradition and the future, it's essential to strike a balance that preserves our heritage while embracing progress. Stand together drawing upon collective wisdom and resilience to forge a future where solidarity prevails over division.

Happy Juneteenth! Today marks a celebration of freedom, resilience, and the ongoing quest for equality. 🌍✊ The Emancipation Proclamation outlawed slavery in the U.S. in 1863. While Confederate states initially resisted, it wasn't until June 19, 1865, that Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, delivering the news of freedom to all enslaved individuals. This historical milestone led to the official proclamation of Emancipation Day in Texas in 1938. Texas went on to become the first state to establish Juneteenth as a state holiday in 1980. Juneteenth was officially recognized as a federal holiday in 2021. It became the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was adopted in 1983. As we commemorate this important day, let's reflect on our shared history and responsibility. Let's pledge to actively cultivate inclusivity in our workplaces and communities. This is really important. There are legitimate debates to be had about DEI practice and theory, but there is absolutely no reason to back away from racial justice. In particular, there is no reason why monied foundations or other organizations should misinterpret and incorrectly over-apply the Supreme Court's ruling on affirmative action programs in public universities to back away from fair treatment and expanding opportunity for Black, Hispanic, and Indigenous Americans in any context. The majority of Americans, including many conservatives, believe that there is still much progress that needs to be made. Applause to MacArthur Foundation.
