The latest tool in the effort to reduce the amount of methane in the atmosphere are satellites that scan for traces of the gas. Recently, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management awarded Duke Energy $1 million to further work it already began on its methane-monitoring platform that uses satellites, sensors, and other innovative technologies to detect leaks and measure real-time methane emissions on natural gas distribution systems. Portfolio company Kairos Aerospace is kicking off a new project with funding from the US Department of Energy's Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management called "Developing Methane Emissions Inventories by Fusing Airborne, Satellite and Modeled Assessments." Along with partners Stanford University, Lawrence Berkeley Lab , MiQ - Methane Intelligence, and GHGSAT, Kairos will be using its cutting-edge technology to create full-spectrum estimates of methane emissions in two significant oil- and gas-producing basins. It will be fascinating to follow this project, which should result in not only targeted approaches to mitigating emissions in those areas, but also broader learnings to apply elsewhere. Spirit Energy has awarded Shearwater the responsibility of conducting their seismic survey, which aims to gather and process an estimated five hundred square kilometers of high-resolution 3D seismic data. This survey will be carried out over the Morecambe Bay gas fields and it will be used to determine the definition of the potential carbon storage sites. Although this site has had surveys carried out on it before, this survey will collect results that have a much higher resolution dataset than has been previously used. ⚠️ As little as 0.2 percent of fossil fuel gas leaks, making natural gas as big a contributor to climate change as coal. This matters especially over the next 20 years, as the average lifetime of methane is 12 years in the atmosphere (with an order of magnitudes more radiative forcing than CO2). 💰 Thus, subsidizing the switch to fossil gas as a so-called “transition” technology is a dangerous distraction. we need #oil and #gas for many years to achieve the Industrial Revolution, and modern life owes its existence to oil and gas. There are some outlier #plants and bactrria that get their energy from volcano vents, or ocean vents, energy from the inside of the earth. Yet, 95% of life on earth is using energy from the #sun to efficiently exist. That being said we need to #embracethechange and take on the #challenge now that the technology (wind, solar, batteries, hydro) is coming into existence to allow us to follow the efficient systems devised by nature for capturing energy on #earth. #letsbeleaders and get ahead of this one just like we did with oil, with tech, and with military, we need to focus on this energy transition … not for saving the planet, we do it because we are humans and we adapt and change. #prohuman
