Today, on annual Rare Disease Day, it's a good opportunity to advocate for equality for these patients in all aspects too. Rare disease affect worldwide way over 350 million people and the majority are children. Skeletal rare diseases alone, including osteogenesis imperfecta, juvenile Paget’s disease, or osteopetrosis, represent just a few among over 400 developmental abnormalities affecting the skeletal system. POROUS develops ultrasound cortical bone microstructure assessments to enable research in skeletal rare diseases and solve current diagnostic challenges. Our adventure began with a diagnosis that felt like uncharted territory: Optic Nerve Hypoplasia (ONH) coupled with intractable epilepsy. Initially foreign and intimidating, these words have now become a part of our daily vocabulary. They have taught us resilience, strength, and the true meaning of community. Despite the complexities, our story is not just about the hurdles. It's about the incredible support system we've found, the knowledge we've gained, and the unwavering hope we hold onto. March is Autoimmune Awareness Month. Let's see how aware you are. Quick True and False. 1. Approximately 50 million Americans are living with autoimmune disease. 2. 4% of the world's population has at least one autoimmune disease; 8% of the US population. And rising. 3. 80% of people living with autoimmune disease are female. 4. On average it takes four and a half years and four doctors to receive a diagnosis. 5. There are over 100 autoimmune diseases. 6. Autoimmunity is now one of the most common disease categories, ahead of cancer and heart disease. 7. Most autoimmune diseases are not curable. 8. You can lead a thriving and flourishing life with autoimmune disease. All of the above are TRUE. (Stay with me for exciting news from my business on #8!) May is #CIDPAwarenessMonth. CIDP, or chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, is a rare disease with less than 2 in 100,000 cases reported each year. CIDP affects the peripheral nervous system, which is responsible for sending critical information between the brain and body. Treatment options are limited for this autoantibody disease. At J&J, our researchers are pushing the boundaries of science towards new solutions that leverage our rapidly expanding understanding of the underlying cause of autoantibody diseases. We hope to one day lead the way in delivering innovative and transformational treatments for people living with CIDP. 

https://lnkd.in/eP9FYvHN Today, Thursday 29th February is not only rare because it's a leap year, it's also Rare Disease Day!  A rare disease affects less than 1 in 2,000 people. Several of our members have different forms of EDS. Most types of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) are rare. Some are very rare. The true numbers of people affected are not known but they are thought to range from 1 in 20,000 to 1 in 40,000 for classical EDS and between 1 in 50,000 and 1 in 200,000 people for vascular EDS, to less than 1 in 1 million for some types! The Hypermobile type is still under investigation and undergoing a lot of research. This snapshot of the content of our recent paper helps highlight the unmet need of those living with FCS. The devastating impacts of acute pancreatitis events and the broader long term life impacts. Currently the only treatment involves dietary restrictions which add to the negative impact on quality of life. Hopefully recent positive phase 3 trial results will translate into more options for the FCS community.
