👟 Kyrie Irving’s First Signature Shoe With Anta Kyrie Irving debuted his first signature shoe with Anta, the Kai 1, during a game against the Brooklyn Nets, showcasing the "Artist on Court" colorway. The design of the Kai 1 shares similarities with Irving's previous Nike signature line, featuring a mid-cut construction, a midfoot strap for lockdown, and his signature logo on the tongue. Nike cut ties with Kyrie in December 2022 under controversial circumstances after comments Kyrie made on social media related to antisemitism. The Anta Kai 1 "Artist on Court" colorway is set to release on March 6, with additional colorways expected in the coming months. Anta is a Chinese sneaker brand - we'll soon see whether their strategy of partnering with someone like Kyrie Irving can help them gain market share. Notably, Klay Thompson of the Golden State Warriors also has a signature sneaker line with Anta. With two of the biggest stars in basketball on their roster, Anta is starting to develop more brand awareness. Take My Money: 001 Currently, sneaker collaborations seem to flood the market every week, making it increasingly rare to come across meaningful and thought-out releases that truly celebrate each franchise. However, the latest partnership between Kith and ASICS is refreshing to see as it delivers a tribute to the iconic X-Men franchise on its 60th anniversary. The collection features 7 pairs that reference beloved characters, and what sets it apart is the attention to detail in the packaging and presentation of this capsule. Firstly, customers won't know what pair they have purchased until opening the box, evoking cherished 90s nostalgia of unboxing trading cards in hopes of discovering that elusive rare card. Speaking of trading cards, each pair of sneakers comes with a matching trading card, with some being rarer than others, boasting even 1/1 variations. Alongside the shoes, a comic featuring an original storyline and artwork is being released, with appearances from Kith founder Ronnie Fieg and friends such as Nigel Sylvester. As a follow up to my review of the Nike Zoom Maxfly sprint spikes, I discuss the replacement of the original spikes with a brand new pair. We discovered that the original pair was exceptionally more compliant than the new pair, particularly on the left foot. Not surprisingly, my son has had some soft-tissue issues on the left side in the distal hamstring tendon where it intersects with the calf muscles. Because of the significant differences in shoe stiffness, we devised a progressive plan to re-introduce a new pair of the shoes. Since he is training for and competing in the 100m and 200m sprint events, we thought it best to do a gradual re-introduction of the new shoes over a number of workouts, gradually building up total sprint volume in them and prioritizing upright sprint reps over starts and acceleration, at least for a few training sessions. This highlights the need to consider the 'impact' of changes in footwear, particularly for track spikes, football and soccer cleats and other shoes that tend to be on the stiffer side. I have also heeded the same concern when working with shoe drop -- transitioning from a greater drop to a zero drop shoe. The repetitive nature of running can have significant cumulative affects on soft-tissues and joints. THE STORY OF THE PUMA SLIPSTREAM Born in 1987, the first model of the SLIPSTREAM was a basketball shoe that succeeded the SKY LX. It became an iconic sneaker silhouette, favoured by basketball players on the courts for its performance, stability and cushioning. Off-court, it made its way to the streets and found a following among sneaker connoisseurs and the subculture generation of hip-hop dance crews for its unique design. SLIPSTREAM DEBUT - 1987 The simple basketball shoe with a white base and charcoal grey colour scheme was equipped with the “ANTI SHOCK SYSTEM”. At first, the SLIPSTREAM was sold as a college basketball shoe to match the school’s programme colours, but given its growing popularity, it became available in multiple colours in 1988. Basketball shoes were becoming more fashionable during this time, and soon lifestyle models such as THE BEAST and SLIPSTREAM SNAKE were also released. PUMA pioneered the lifestyle space with these two styles, using material embellishments like faux snakeskin, leather and faux fur. "Today the ‘80s basketball style is very trend relevant. The clean canvas lends itself well to additional executions and storytelling. The key to a timeless design is making sure it is accessible and not the most complicated or unique item out there. It has to be driven by culture, not by hype." SLIPPING INTO THE FUTURE - 2021 In 2021, the shoe was re-issued for today’s consumer, staying true to its 1980s basketball heritage. One of the first to debut for the launch, THE BEAUTY AND THE BEAST pack is a reference to the Japanese iterations of THE BEAST in the past. The modern designs take a new play on the beast name and pay homage to the storybook tale.
