‘Have you ever driven down a street of newly built homes and wondered why it just didn’t feel right?’ This is the opening line in the flap copy of the book ‘Get Your House Right’ by Marianne Cusato and Ben Pentreath. It is a book we often reference in our work. It talks about traditional design principles and ratios (which you may have heard us refer to a few times!) and how good design can always be linked back to these principles. A comment we often hear when we have visitors to our showroom is ‘I love the feeling I get from a Westbury, but I can’t quite put my finger on it. It has all the same elements I have seen elsewhere, but it feels different.’ That feeling the visitor is talking about comes from what we call the 'Golden Ratio'. The proportion of the window, door or orangery with the existing property, and the proportion of its own components such as the glazing, cills, entablature and so on, to each other. The same applies for much architecture, and design generally – if the proportions and balance are right, you can feel it, in the same way it just doesn’t feel right if they are off kilter.
