Florida, Arizona, and Washington, DC, are the only states to earn an "A" in the 2024 National Charter School Law Rankings & Scorecard by the Center for Education Reform (CER). According to CER, Florida narrowly beat Arizona for the top spot, with Florida making facilities funding more equitable for schools and having a greater proportionate share of charter schools and students. Eleven states moved up in the rankings and eight states lost ground, including California and Massachusetts. Project 2025 argues that the federal government should not promote or require “restorative justice,” which addresses student misbehavior by focusing on repairing harm rather than removing children from the classroom through suspension and expulsion. It also states that the office for civil rights within the Education Department should stop investigating schools for “disparate impact” in discipline—the idea that school discipline policies that disproportionately affect students in one racial or ethnic group might violate federal civil rights law, even if those policies are neutral on their face and applied evenhandedly.

University of Cincinnati to fund series of new dorms as demand for housing grows The University of Cincinnati is spending big bucks to deal with its student housing crisis. Many incoming freshmen live off-campus because there aren't enough dorms, so now the university is spending $36 million to fund a massive series of new dorms. After interviewing Daniel Kelly, the new dean of the University of St. Thomas School of Law, I learned we have at least 2 things in common: 1) We both attended Catholic high schools in greater Chicago; 2) our moms were both elementary school teachers who later received their doctorates and taught education at Chicago-area colleges.
