According to The Trevor Project, LGBTQ+ youth are at risk because of a lack of acceptance, understanding, empathy, and compassion. That lack comes at a great cost: a national survey conducted in 2023 found 41% of LGBTQ+ youth have seriously considered suicide in the last year. In the quest for equality and support, one stark reality often overlooked is the disproportionate underfunding of LGBTQ organizations. At The Trevor Project, we are acutely aware of this challenge, which a recent insightful article by my fabulous colleague, Tina M. As we dive into Pride Month, it's essential to recognize the LGBTQ+ community's ongoing journey for acceptance, equality, and liberation. Beyond the colorful parades and festivities, Pride Month holds a significant purpose — to shed light on persisting challenges and to stand united for a more inclusive society. At A New Leaf, we understand that the road to true acceptance is not always easy. LGBTQ+ individuals often face discrimination, disparities in healthcare, and even homelessness. These issues persist even as society progresses. That's why our commitment to inclusion extends to every corner of our community. While we celebrate the victories, it's crucial to remember that the struggle is far from over. Systemic inequalities still exist, and many LGBTQ+ individuals continue to experience discrimination and hardship. A New Leaf is here to provide support, offering resources such as mental health services, housing solutions, and a safe, welcoming space. Pride Month reminds us that the fight for equality and justice continues. By acknowledging the challenges that LGBTQ+ individuals face and standing in solidarity, we move closer to a future where everyone can live authentically and have the support they need. This Pride Month, let's come together to address the issues that matter, advocate for change, and celebrate the LGBTQ+ community.

June is Pride Month! 🏳️🌈 For the month of June, we'll have some weekly LGBTQ+ Housing facts for you. The LGBTQ+ community tends to be significantly younger than the non-LGBTQ+ population. Specifically, 52% of individuals identifying as LGBTQ+ are under 35 years old, while only 23% of those identifying as straight and cisgender fall into the same age group. These age disparities account for roughly half of the difference in homeownership rates between LGBTQ+ and non-LGBTQ+ individuals, as younger people are generally less likely to own homes compared to older individuals.

Even though Pride Month has come to an end, our commitment to supporting the LGBTQ+ community in adult social care settings remains strong. While there has been an improvement in meeting the needs of LGBTQ+ individuals in many aspects, we still lack appropriate support in social care services. There is also an assumption that all older people are grandparents and have family to fall back on when their health declines and they need support. However, 90% of LGBTQ+ people are ageing without children, and many have little contact with their biological families. This increases the need for more formal support and care services in later life. Although the number of LGBTQ+ seniors will double in ten years, there are few, if any, existing care schemes with a focus on older LGBTQ+ residents. The same is true of care homes. That’s why we believe that live-in care offers an excellent alternative for those seeking care in an inclusive and supportive environment.
