The Beam and Block flooring system is efficient as requires minimal excavation, completely eliminating the need for backfilling since it is a suspended floor, translating into significant cost and time savings. With the Beam and Block system, you only need to excavate the trenches where your foundations/wallings carrying the super-structure is present whereas in a conventional slab, one must excavate the entire area for the foundation, cast the foundations, and backfill after the cast. We are out of the ground! 🎉 We are very please to share these progress photos of a pair of houses currently on site in Herefordshire 🏠🏠 One of these houses, Llama Croft, will (hopefully🤞) be our first certified Passivhaus made entirely** out of natural, bio-based materials! Over the coming months, we will be sharing posts about how things are progressing on-site, and also explaining key details and design considerations that have gone into this unique passive house design. The site has be cleared & leveled as needed and the steel screw piles have been installed @stopdigginguk which will carry the glulam beams by the suspended timber floor. There are few options for concrete-free foundations and considering various factors (embodied carbon, soil disturbance, re-usability, recyclability...) and on-balance the steel screw-piles were the best option. The Beam and Block slab is a cured and ready-to-install slab during all weather conditions. The rains affect workers, and this leads to construction delays as workers abandon their work to protect themselves from the rains. Construction joints are an extra cost since the client will require a bonding agent for slab continuity. Rainwater also increases the water/cement ratio which affects the workability of the concrete during the cast of a conventional slab. This leads to low strength and durability of the slab. The Beam and Block system is therefore not affected by rainy weather, unlike the conventional slab. Using rubber support pads there is minimal surface preparation required. For on grade applications, a retaining wall is not always needed as the excellent frictional properties of the rubber pads can be sufficient to stop lateral movement with many types of pavers. If the pavers are being laid over a sloping substrate and the resulting surface is to be perfectly horizontal, pads will need to be stacked to build up the increasing height required. How Mass Timber Can "Turn the Corner" or, avoiding putting mass timber in an (orthogonal) box Mass timber floor and roof panels are, simplistically, rectangles. We often talk about the importance of minimizing timber volume as a means of cost-optimizing the structural system. Keep panels as thin as possible Avoid unnecessarily long spans But another effective way to keep the costs of a mass timber building down are to avoid material waste. Building geometry, and how the mass timber elements fit within that geometry, play a big role here. That's not to say that every mass timber building should be a rectangular box. But if you are introducing angled sections, non-orthogonal elements, jogs, etc. know how best to frame those spaces, with a keen eye toward waste minimization and piece count.
