Syed Afsar, a 45-year-old business owner from Bangalore, has navigated numerous challenges throughout his entrepreneurial journey. Alongside his brother, Syed began his venture in Mysore, selling silk sarees for a decade. Unfortunately, this business proved unprofitable, prompting their relocation to Bangalore. In Bangalore, they established a small kirana (grocery) store in Koramangala, which they have operated for the past 25 years. They rent the store and have a well-organized distribution network, sourcing staple items from Yeshwanthpur and snacks from various small distributors who visit their shop. Their business flourished until 2021, when the rise of online markets disrupted their operations. The growing popularity of online shopping led to a decline in demand for physical stores like theirs. Additionally, retaining workers became challenging as delivery jobs offered better pay and more convenience compared to working in a store. When asked about using online wholesale platforms, Syed explained that they had never explored this option due to concerns about high commission charges and the perceived risks involved. This highlights a significant knowledge gap that, if addressed, could potentially help their business grow. Syed and his brother also considered opening a dark store but faced challenges related to sourcing products, managing expiry dates, and maintaining an appropriate range of products. Previously, their products sold within ten days, but now items remain unsold for a month, leading to expiry issues and uncooperative distributors who refuse to help clear the unsold stock. Faced with these challenges and ongoing losses, both brothers have decided to close their current business. Despite this setback, they are determined to start anew and not give up. *The owners preferred not to share their photos for the post. #risersofindia #kiranasofindia

India’s warehousing sector is growing and more companies are ramping up their investments, reports The Economic Times. For instance, Zomato has signed a deal to open a warehouse spanning around three lakh sq. ft. in Bengaluru. While DP World opened a similar facility in Maharashtra, Blackstone Inc plans to double its warehouse holdings in India over the next three years. Demand from the e-commerce, third-party logistics, and manufacturing sectors have contributed to this trend, says Anupama Reddy, VP and Co-Group Head, Corporate Ratings at ICRA. India’s total warehouse capacity in 2023 stood at 38.8 million sq. ft. across eight cities, according to data from CBRE. Tier 2 cities such as Lucknow, Chandigarh, Nashik, Hosur, and Coimbatore are emerging as the most-preferred destinations, the data shows. Meet "The Low Price Diamond in Potato Chips Category of 🇮🇳" whose company 🇮🇳 largest nmmkeen conglomerate wants to buy 💰 1. 48-year-old Amit Kumar returned to India after he could not find a job. He opened a chemical dye business called "Dealinchem" in 1999, but failed. In less than a year, Amit had piled up a debt of 6 CR. 2. He thought of helping out in his father's clothing business in Indore. He worked hard and started repaying his debts. But started losing respect as well. Everyone thought he was hiding behind his father. So, Amit decided to leave the business to start something of his own. 🙌 3. While thinking of ideas, he landed up on" Peppy Cheese Balls". He wanted to sell them in the underpenetrated markets of Indore. So, Amit met his brother's classmate and took 15 Lakhs on a promise to return if this venture failed. In 2002, Prakash Snacks was born. 🚀 4. The idea was simple ⏩ Import cheese balls from Lucknow and process them at a small 100 sq ft office in Indore's Navlakha locality. The product became a hit and landed revenues of 22 Lakhs in the first year and 7 CR by the third year. ✅ 5. With the roaring success, Amit started his factory in Indore (2006). He produced potato chips under "Yellow Diamonds" and launched a competition to Pepsi's famous "Kurkure" called "Chulbule". With new products, Amit entered Delhi and Haryana. He thought he had it until he faced failure once again. 👇 6. The 4000 CR Haldirams and 1500 CR Balaji Wafers had shadowed Yellow Diamonds and Chulbule. So, Amit loaded his 5 Rs pack with 30 gm chips compared to the 22 gm offered by the rivals. The high-value idea worked as Prakash Snacks went from 1% to 4% market share. 📉 7. Focusing on 99% of products at the super affordable Rs 5, Prakash Snacks entered Mumbai and Pune too. The distribution requests came up from even rural parts of India. Finally, Amit incorporated a new company and merged Prakash into it. In 2010, Prataap Snacks started. 🚀 8. By 2011, Prataap Snacks had doubled its capacity to 12,500 metric tons via another plant in Indore. It became a 150 CR company. Seeing the success, Sequoia Capital finally invested 62 CR in 2012. 💸 9. With capital, Prataap entered another category of Rings and commissioned a factory in Guwahati for it. Aimed at kids, Amit started putting toys inside rings and increased quantity by another 25%. To promote further, He also roped in Salman Khan as the brand ambassador in 2016. 10. Salman and the kids took the brand to an 800-CR company in 2017. Next year, Prataap Snacks got listed on NSE and BSE. Its IPO oversubscribed by a whopping 47 times. 📉 ➡️ Amit has shown that "Dildaar hai Hum" is not just his brand tagline but that of his life, too. #startups #casestudy #diamond #chips #realbharat #branding #growth #mindset #madeinindia #brandbluidling #heartwork #ruraltowns Disclaimer : This case study post 1324 is only for educational purpose

Recently I went to a mela and interacted with a lot of local sellers. All the local sellers were from different parts of India like Jammu & Kashmir, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, West Bengal, and a lot more. 📌 One of the best thing for all the businesses out there: https://lnkd.in/gR7abHzZ Coming back to the story, I purchased a bag from a local seller, he was from Chandigarh. And after a week I went out with my friends carrying the same bag. Two of my friends asked me from where did you get it? I told them, I got it from a mela in Delhi. They asked how they got it, and do they had a number, website or something. And, then instantly I realised this sector is so unorganised and completely relies on offline exhibitions. For example, if they were on Amazon, I could easily give that link to my friends and they would have placed the order, SIMPLE! But that’s not the case here. So, this is for all the local sellers and small businesses to start expanding in online mode too. They can start their selling journey on Amazon and become a part of our 14 Lakh+ seller community over there. This will result in more customers, and more retention, and they will be able to sell across the world. Such a great initiative by Amazon👏 #amazon #ecommerceplatform #digitalindia

How Warehousing in Tier 2 and Tier 3 is changing India's retail market. Gone are the days when only big cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore mattered. Now, tier-2 and tier-3 cities are the new hotspots for warehousing investments. Why? ▪️ Because GST has made logistics easier and cheaper, and removed state-level hurdles. ▪️ Because infrastructure has improved, and connectivity has increased. ▪️ Because the government has supported business growth and innovation in these cities. ▪️ Because these cities offer strategic benefits, such as being close to new markets and having low land costs. Coimbatore, Lucknow, Ghaziabad, Guwahati, Patna, Nagur Bhubaneshwar, Hosur, Goa, and Vijayawada are some of the tier-2 and tier-3 cities that are attracting warehousing investments. These cities have several advantages such as- » being close to emerging markets » having lower land costs, » Lower labour costs Tier-2 and tier-3 cities in India have become the new hubs for warehousing investments. This was on the back of an auto in #bengaluru. while the statement is extreme , the sentiment is not uncommon. 🧠 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 & 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗿𝘂𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲, 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗲𝘁𝗰: ✔️ Concentration of economic power in a few cities is not good for any country especially one as densely populated as India. ✔️ It disrupts the local ecosystem - rapid need for great infrastructure ( Bengaluru failed at it ), rapid price increase especially in property ( it benefits the local property owner but not the majority of local non property owners or people who have moved to lucknow ), a change in green areas , biodiversity etc and finally the clashes of cultures. 💡India's growth potential lies not in growing Bengaluru, Mumbai ,Delhi . It lies in unlocking the value locked in tier 2 and tier 3 cities from a Lucknow ,Jaipur to Agartala & Prayagraj. 💡 For that the Venture capitalists need to look beyond their own subconscious biases and explore these cities. #business #strategy #growth #roi #bengaluru
