Did you know that the prevalence of myopia in premature children with or without treatment for ROP (retinopathy of prematurity) is significantly higher than in full-term children? In our December 11 live webinar, we’ll explore the dynamics of myopia development in both treated and untreated cases of ROP. This lecture will elaborate on myopia development and evaluate the associated factors in preterm infants treated with anti-VEGF (Intravitreal Bevacizumab) or laser photocoagulation. The latest research findings, clinical insights, and potential strategies to mitigate myopia in the context of ROP will be discussed. Our lecturer will be Dr. Neelam Pawar of Aravind Eye Hospitals, India, and the University of Michigan, USA. The webinar begins at 2:00 PM UTC on December 11, and you can sign up for the event now: https://ow.ly/reiZ50QbFQw . Today is World Kidney Day. On this day, we reflect on the importance of our kidneys for our overall health. Unfortunately, approximately 2000 people per year experience kidney failure. For many of these patients, a kidney transplant is the best treatment option. The condition of kidney patients is often compromised by chronic kidney disease, comorbidities, and dialysis. However, for patients on the waiting list for a kidney transplant, it is crucial to be in the best possible physical and mental condition for the transplant. Our colleagues from the Nursing Science unit are conducting research titled PREhabilitation of CAndidates for REnal Transplantation (PreCareTx), funded by the Dutch Kidney Foundation (Nierstichting). For this research, they cooperate with colleagues from Health Psychology, Nephrology and Revalidation. With this research, our colleagues are investigating the effect of a prehabilitation program on the overall condition of patients on the waiting list for a kidney transplant. Prehabilitation is a form of rehabilitation conducted prior to surgery. Its goal is to improve the physical condition and mental well-being of individuals who are undergoing surgery through lifestyle changes. For this study, our colleagues are comparing the effects of a prehabilitation programme with those of standard care. They developed the prehabilitation programme in consultation with kidney patients, their families, and healthcare providers, tailoring it to the needs of patients on the transplant waiting list. You will find more details about PreCareTx in the paper below ⬇ #PreCareTx #WorldKidneyDay #Kidney #Prehabilitation #Research #Nursing #Science Avril Haanstra, Evelyn Finnema, Adelita Ranchor, Stefan Berger, Coby Annema

"My motivation for research originates from my clinical work as a doctor in a labor ward. Most labors are low-risk after uncomplicated pregnancies, which however is no guarantee for an uncomplicated labor. The vast majority of vaginal births result in vigorous healthy newborns. The challenge for me as an obstetrician is to refrain from medical measures when not needed, and yet to identify rare risk situations and act promptly when necessary to prevent and avoid birth-related hypoxic injuries in newborns." Several months ago, our article titled "Pediatric patient with renovascular hypertension treated by angioplasty: case report" was published in the Journal of the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the University of Cuenca in Ecuador, and is available online. This article represents a valuable contribution to the field of medical research in angioplasty, underscoring our commitment to excellence in pediatric medical care. The case involves an adolescent with refractory hypertension, managed with multiple medications over two years. Despite inconclusive non-invasive imaging, a suspected renovascular etiology prompted catheter-based angiography, revealing renal artery stenosis. Successful balloon angioplasty normalized blood pressure, maintaining stability medication-free over a 22-month follow-up. This publication highlights the effectiveness and safety of percutaneous balloon renal angioplasty in resolving renovascular hypertension, underscoring its significance in pediatric care. Proud of our team's dedication and contributions to advancing pediatric renal angioplasty. Here's to continued innovation and impactful outcomes! "Holes in the heart" refers to congenital heart defects, where there is an abnormal opening between the heart chambers. These defects can be between the two upper chambers called atrial septal defects or between the two lower chambers called ventricular septal defects. They are present from birth but may come to be discovered anytime from early infancy to even adolescence or adulthood. Treatment may involve medication, catheter-based interventions, or surgical procedures. Early detection, comprehensive diagnostic assessments, and collaboration between pediatric cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons are crucial for successful management. Supporting affected individuals and their families through education, counseling, and ongoing medical care contributes to improved outcomes for those with congenital heart defects. #CongenitalHeartDefects #HolesInTheHeart #PediatricCardiology #HeartHealthAwareness #CHDAwareness #HeartDefectInterventions #HeartSurgerySuccess #CongenitalHeartCare #HeartHealthAdvocacy #EarlyDetection #PediatricCardiologyCare #HeartWarriors #FamilySupport #HeartAwareness #LivingWithCHD #CardiacInterventions
