Helping FQHCs, public health departments, and other health nonprofits win more grants, gain greater strategic clarity, and meet community needs. Writer. Facilitator. She/her.
Every August, the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) sponsors National Health Center Week (NHCW) to celebrate and increase awareness of America’s 1,400 community health centers. Given the focus of my work with health centers, of course I love this week! It’s a great opportunity to highlight the commitment and passion of health center staff, board members, and supporters who make it possible to provide quality, comprehensive healthcare services to more than 30 million patients across 14,500 communities annually. The theme this year is “The Roadmap to a Stronger America.” And it kicks off today, with a focus on public housing. Some community health centers receive grant support for the federal Public Housing Primary Care (PHPC) program, a special population designation. The mission of the PHPC program is to provide residents of public housing with increased access to comprehensive primary health care and disease prevention services. In 2021, more than 5.7 million health center patients were served at a location in or immediately accessible to a public housing site. We know housing is health - really, housing is one of the MOST important social determinants of health! Understanding the connection between housing and health enables healthcare providers to transform care with integrated services, meet the needs of their patients, and demonstrate the value they bring to communities and payers. Are you excited about National Health Center Week? And do you agree that housing is health? #nhcw23 #valuechcs #healthcenters #fqhcs #sdoh #socialdeterminantsofhealth #communityhealth #publichousing

☎️ It's crunch time for supporters of Community Health Centers. We need you to pick up the phone and call your elected officials! Lawmakers in the House and Senate are working against the clock on bipartisan bills that extend and increase funding for the more than 1,400 health centers nationwide and invest in the next generation of primary care providers. Please call your Representative today! Tell them why we need them to vote "yes" on long-term, stable funding for Community Health Centers. A few things to know before you call: * A sample script will be on the page after you enter your address. * You will be calling one Representative from the district of the address you enter. * You do NOT need to be an expert. You live or work in their district, and your experience matters to them. * The staffer answering your call is responsible for sharing your feedback with the Representative’s team. You can ask for their commitment to VOTE YES. Hear from staff, board members, and patients in this video from the following health centers about WHY there is no time to waste. Not only are these community health centers are in need of funding but are in desperate need of a makeover on how their operations function. From a consultant's perspective, there's been plenty of times where we've seen workflows that constantly omits money on the table for every patient lifecycle within these respective facilities. More importantly, these deficiencies drastically affects the quality of services that the community receives thus creating a huge reduction with patient access. Adding more money to a system without the proper infrastructure is equivalent to filling water into a leaky bucket. #fqhcs #communityhealthcenters #communityhealth #patientaccess #healthcareconsulting https://lnkd.in/eqeKDDUr

Inequities in health care have long existed for Black and Latino patients. But in Massachusetts, health care organizations are finding new ways to address them, according to researchers at the UC Berkeley School of Public Health. A Berkeley-led study is the first to examine the success of an innovative partnership between the state’s largest nonprofit health plan and clinicians in its network. “Health care organizations are giving increased attention to advancing racial equity. Blue Cross, however, is among a handful of commercial payers that have taken concrete steps to reduce racial and ethnic disparities in care for all patients—not just their own,” said Berkeley Public Health's Hector Rodriguez, professor of health policy and management and study coauthor.
