It's #Pride Month, and we asked our behavioral health providers to share a special Pride-related #MentalHealth tip. "In your interactions with LGBTQ+ individuals, it is important to lead with compassion and respect for their identity. It is essential to affirm their way of life and to use their preferred gender pronouns. You may begin by introducing yourself with your gender pronouns to indicate that you are open and understand the importance of using proper pronouns. Always ask for preferred gender pronouns and names to avoid making assumptions." LGBTQ+ friends, family members, colleagues and neighbors experience detrimental mental health impacts at higher levels than people who are heterosexual and cisgender. Acknowledging that siloed, single system approaches are insufficient and unsustainable, Envision:You uses a statewide, multi-system approach that seeks to mitigate disparities at all levels. Envision:You collaborates with clinicians, educators, researchers, policy-makers and leaders in the behavioral health field. We provide LGBTQ+ specific trainings, foster a deeper understanding of the queer community and their needs, and advocate for policies that address systemic inequities. By doing this, Envision:You is moving the needle from disparity to equity for LGBTQ+ people living with mental health concerns. It takes extra effort from allied mental health counselors to prove their empathy and their understanding. Of course this doesn't just apply to cisgender heterosexual therapists, this includes everyone. LGBTQ+ mental health professionals certainly have an informed perspective from their own life experience, but they're not without bias. Some may even favor a binary view of sex and sexuality, excluding bisexuals, pansexuals, asexuals, as well as trans, nonbinary, and queer people. Additionally, an LGBTQ+ counselor may or may not be familiar with polyamorous or alternative relationship dynamics. This is why I say it takes extra effort, as LGBTQ+ clients have many well-warranted defenses to keep themselves safe from prejudice and ignorance. Trust has to be earned through time, effort, and intention. ‘Navigating Therapist Self-Disclosure and Sharing of Lived Experiences' is the next webinar in the #LGBTQ+ #mentalhealth series and is taking place on Monday 15th April from 7pm-8.15pm. This introductory workshop will introduce key considerations, ideas and important clinical implications for the navigation of sharing lived experienced/therapist self-disclosure with therapy clients. Particular consideration will be given to therapists that work with, and live within, the same communities. For example, an LGBTQ+ therapist that works with LGBTQ+ clients in their local area, and also attends LGBTQ+ spaces that may lead to them bumping into clients outside of therapy. Examples will be discussed and in response to participant feedback, space will be dedicated to group discussion. The Sharing Lived Experiences Framework (SLEF) will also be presented as a key tool to support discussion around this topic. CPD/attendance certificates are provided after the session, alongside a copy of the slides. If you're interested, or know of others that might be, here is the eventbrite link: https://lnkd.in/eWhw4gYh #LGBT #lesbian #gay #bisexual #transgender #queer #mentalhealth #training #webinar #livedexperience #psychology #clinicalpsychology

🌈🔗 Comparison is natural, but it becomes a challenge when we measure ourselves against someone in a vastly different situation. The key is to connect with people in your community who share similar experiences. When you surround yourself with like-minded individuals in the LGBTQ+ community, your standards of success and failure become more relatable and compassionate. ✨ Remember, your journey is unique and comparing yourself to those who understand your struggles can make your standards much kinder. . . #EmotionalWellbeing #MentalHealth #HealthyConversations #PsychologicalWellbeing #PsychologicalSupport #EmotionalLearning #EmotionalResilience #LGBTMentalHealth #MinorityStress #PersonalEmpowerment #InclusiveCommunity #PromotionOfMentalHealth #CommunityPsychology #LGBTQSocialSupport #LGBTWellbeing #LGBTCommunity #LGBTQPsychology #PrideLGBT #LGBTEmotionalWellbeing #LGBTQAwareness
