For former FACTS elective student Dr. Margaret Paules, medical school education in FABMs was minimal. Her professors described these methods as the “you are gonna get pregnant method.” The FABM user experience reflects this knowledge gap. As part of the elective, Dr. Paules interviewed a woman who has used 4 different natural methods of family planning: Billings, Creighton, Marquette and now Sympto-Thermal. Over the years, she encountered several medical professionals who were not supportive of her choice to use FABMs for family planning. This interview highlights the importance of educating physicians in the various FABMs to provide women with accurate information. Check out the FACTS shared decision-making tool that clinicians can use to aid patients in selecting an effective FABM! I’m honoured and excited to serve as the Interim Chair of the Department of Medicine at Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, the Interim Department of Medicine Head at London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) and Chief of Medicine at St. Joseph's Health Care London effective December 1, 2023 for a 2 year term. It has been an absolute privilege to lead the Critical Care group at LHSC, especially during the peak of the covid pandemic. It was a sustained period of pressure where the entire team across all the spectrum of health disciplines came together and decided to center patients and their families. Not for a week or two, or a month or two but for over 2 years running. Leading such a dedicated group of professionals is a privilege. To paraphrase an expression, society as a whole owes so much to this small group of professionals. And it has come at a huge personal cost for many. Which is part of what makes leadership in this post acute covid phase so challenging. There is much work to be done - advancing healthcare for the people of London, Ontario and indeed all of Southwestern Ontario; helping healthcare providers heal from the wounds of the trauma of covid and, of course looking to designing a healthcare system that meets the challenges of the next 20 years, not merely one that recovers from the challenges of the last few. #Leadership #Medicine

Grateful to have participated in the National Workshop for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis hosted by the Sri Ramachandra Faculty of Nursing on May 3rd and 4th. It was enlightening to see the depth of research involved in medical papers and reviews, with valuable insights shared by experienced researchers. Learning that MeSH terms are updated manually for each article in PubMed was most surprising. The hands-on sessions for enhancing search strategies in PubMed and utilizing MetaXL for forest plots were particularly insightful. #SystematicReview #MetaAnalysis

Poetic inquiry is a powerful and empathetic method of research that evolves beyond the constrictions of biomedical models of care often used in nursing science. Our paper explores how poetic inquiry can be used alongside other means of postmodern inquiry to explore the facets of meaning in the human experience. #nursingresearch #poeticinquiry #qualitativeresearch #caregiverresearch #nursingscience

4.5 years ago, I took a leap of faith and started my journey at Premera. It had been 12 years since I had been in the corporate world, as I focused on raising my amazing kids and being actively involved in my community. But when my youngest started kindergarten, I decided to test the waters with a 6-month contract. If I didn't enjoy it, I knew I could always walk away. I still remember my first phone interview with Paul Hollie at Premera. Something about that conversation made me realize that I either wanted to work with him or not go back to work at all. Luckily, after a series of interviews, I was offered the position of Social Impact and Rural Healthcare Support Specialist. To be honest, I had no idea what "Rural Healthcare" meant at the time. But I was passionate about community involvement and eager to dive into this new challenge. As I learned more, I discovered the unique healthcare needs of rural areas in Washington and Alaska. It became my mission to make a difference in these underserved communities. Now, after 4.5 years and more than $100M in grants, I find myself reflecting on the incredible programs I have had the privilege to partner with. From collaborative care models, rural nursing programs, and small equipment grants in rural and remote areas, to youth mental health programs, substance use disorders, and focusing on the intersection of behavioral health and homelessness, we are watching the results come in. Stories like this are the reason I love what I do. The work isn’t done yet; in fact, there’s still a long way to go to provide equitable access to healthcare to everyone in the community, and I’m so grateful to be part of the impact. #Premera #SocialImpact #RuralHealthcare #MakingADifference
I’m inspired by folks like Pierce Claassen, a fourth-year medical student at Washington State University’s Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine. He grew up in rural eastern Washington and thanks to his training at WSU, he plans to stay in eastern Washington as he begins his journey as a physician. Training clinicians focused on rural healthcare is crucial in our state. According to a study from the National Rural Health Association, people living in rural areas suffer worse health outcomes than their urban counterparts. They have less access to primary and preventive care, less longevity, and less chance of surviving a major heart attack, stroke, or other major health event. In Washington state, more than a million people—14% of the state's population—live in rural communities. That’s why we invested $5.5 million in WSU’s Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine, but our grant is not just funding. It’s an investment in the dreams and capabilities of students who will transform healthcare in their communities. #RuralHealthcare #HealthEquity #PremeraSocialImpact

The first week of September marked a significant milestone for the state as we commemorated the first one hundred days in office of His Excellency Sir Siminalayi Fubara, the Executive Governor of Rivers State. In his first 100-day statewide broadcast, His Excellency listed some health sector achievements which underscored his unwavering commitment to his health agenda for the state. Some of the key achievements include: · The renovation of 10 Primary Health Centers (PHCs) across the three senatorial districts in the state. · The reconstruction, upgrade, and equipping of two secondary health facilities: the Professor Kelsey Harrison Memorial Hospital and the Dental Maxillo-facial, ENT and Ophthalmology Hospital. · These two facilities have a combined 150-capacity bed space and state-of-the-art equipment. Once inaugurated, they will provide quality health services to the public. · The Dental Maxillo-facial, ENT and Ophthalmology Hospital will also serve as an annex to the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, a hub for medical research and medical student training. The Ministry of Health wholeheartedly supports His Excellency's unwavering resolve to build a healthier and more vibrant Rivers State. Together, we are making progress towards #Health4AllRivers. What do you think about the Rivers State Government's commitment to improving healthcare delivery? How can we all work together to build a healthier Rivers State? #Health4AllRivers #HealthcareDelivery #RiversState
