Beyond the Cone: Marine Corps Education Needs Fresh Flavors Marine Corps education prides itself on self-evaluation, but sometimes introspection alone leaves us tasting the same, familiar flavors. We risk becoming the perpetual self-licking ice cream cone, admiring only our own reflections. It is time to broaden our horizons and explore what lies beyond our military educational ecosystem. The Finnish education system presents a compelling example. Their departure from traditional, factory-model learning resonates with the current transformation within the Marine Corps. Documentaries like "The Finland Phenomenon" showcase their move towards student-centered approaches, focusing on collaboration, real-world problem-solving, and lifelong learning. The Finnish revolution was not overnight. It took years of unwavering vision, dedicated educators working together, and a willingness to embrace change. This offers two vital lessons for our own system: first, transformative change is not only possible, but achievable, and second, it requires collective effort and unwavering commitment. Instead of simply observing, let us integrate the best practices we find beyond our walls. Can we draw inspiration from Finland's focus on critical thinking and inquiry-based learning to empower our Marines to become resourceful problem solvers? Can we adopt their emphasis on collaboration to foster an environment of shared discovery and growth? By recognizing the limitations of introspective navel-gazing and actively seeking fresh "flavors" from diverse educational philosophies, we can build a Marine Corps education system that truly prepares our Marines for the ever-evolving challenges of the future. Let us step outside the self-licking cone and create a feast of learning opportunities, nurturing adaptability, critical thinking, and the innovative spirit that defines the Marine Corps. In 1974, a group of friends, inspired by the experiences of one who had returned from a Peace Corps assignment, embarked on a transformative mission, which led to the creation of WES. Their purpose was clear: To fill a critical void in the United States education landscape by offering credential evaluations to individuals with international credentials. Empowering Marines through Critical Thinking: Critical thinking - the cornerstone of effective decision-making - is essential for the 21st-century Marine Corps. From fixing an engine to navigating a complex tactical situation, it is the key to success. Recognizing this, the Marine Corps views itself as an educational organization, dedicated to fostering this vital skill. The OODA Loop (Observe, Orient, Decide, Act) developed by John Boyd provides a valuable framework for applying critical thinking in real-time. Unfortunately, traditional training methods may inadvertently de-emphasize independent decision-making, potentially creating an "OOAA Loop" (Observe, Orient, Ask, Act) where initiative stalls at seeking approval. To empower Marines, we must transform the learning environment. Replacing passive lectures with problem-based learning and decision-based exercises encourages critical analysis, independent thought, and rapid action. By trusting our Marines as capable adults, we cultivate initiative and unleash their full potential. Morning mental training with the #wargaming Breakfast Club 👊🥞🎲 before this week's Grand #Strategy classes at Marine Corps University. I facilitated 🔱 Flashpoint: South China Sea 🌏 to allow players to simulate all the instruments of national power over several campaigns of Great Power competition. In the wargame... 🟥 Red's advantage is coercive economic and political power and exploitation of strategic geopolitical diversions to subvert control of the South of China. 🟦 Blue's advantage is expeditionary naval power, counter-action through coalition activities, and illuminating red's behavior that undermines the liberal international order. ⚖️ Players must devise strategies to balance the geopolitical tug-of-war. 🎲 There is great value in the experiential learning that wargaming provides.

Empowering Marines Through Modernized Education: A Collaborative Journey   The Marine Corps is committed to continuous improvement in its learning environment, prioritizing adult learning principles as established in MCISD SATE manual 1553.1a (Chapter 1, page 1-1). This approach recognizes Marines as capable individuals, fostering autonomous learning and empowered operators prepared for the demands of our modern battlefield.   With the 2016 signing of the 1553.1a, a clear decision was made to modernize Marine education, further reinforced by T&E 2030's focus on educational innovation. As FLC leaders, we embrace this charge and acknowledge the outstanding work already accomplished by many centers.   Moving forward, a collaborative spirit is key. By periodically evaluating our practices, identifying areas for growth, and leveraging the strengths of all FLCs, we can collectively elevate the effectiveness of Marine education.
