The free market brings you fantastic comedians, and uninformed, ignorant talk show “personalities.” The free market brings voluntary association, and trade amongst peoples of all different nations, fostering innovation, prosperity and peace. Gov bureaucrats of all nations interfere with the pursuit of happiness of their citizens. NATO…what a bottomless pit of spending, mostly with American citizen’s earnings, ensuring endless wars….We are not the world’s police force, whether with money or might. We don’t make the world safer, quite the opposite…. #ShrinkGovernment

It's all well and good calling for "wider lessons" of the past to be learnt, but calling for this demands not passing over some lessons and applying others inconsistently in ways to suit one's convenience. An example of each of these phenomena from this Times' leader: First, an example of not applying a lesson consistently. The Times 'thunders' today... "The abiding lesson of the Second World War is that the appeasement of territorial aggression merely whets its appetite." Where is and has this noise been over the previous days, weeks, months, years or decades on appeasing Israeli territorial aggression? Second, an example of an inconvenient lesson quietly overlooked... As recognised expressly in international law made in the aftermath of that war - people who need seek asylum from persecution and conflict cannot be left dependent on prior permission to cross borders and the responsibility to receive and protect these people must be shared by all nations. Where has the Times recognition of this lesson been - particularly in recent years as it has repeatedly railed about 'small boats'? https://lnkd.in/eg68R7zt

In commemoration of International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2010, today we recommend reading “La Búsqueda,” by Columbia Law School alumnus Cristobal Jimeno Chadwick (LAW’98) and journalist Daniela Mohor. ▪️ The book tells the story of the 1973 disappearance of Claudio —Jimeno’s father — and the decades long search that followed. ▪️ More than a human rights violation against an individual, enforced disappearance has frequently been used as a strategy to spread terror within the society. ▪️ Once largely the product of military dictatorships, enforced disappearances can nowadays be perpetrated in complex situations of internal conflict, especially as a means of political repression of opponents. ▪️ Hundreds of thousands of people have vanished during conflicts or periods of repression in at least 85 countries around the world. It’s National Reconciliation Week (NRW) - a time to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture in Australia and foster reconciliation. It's the first reconciliation week since the failure of Australian people to adopt the Voice to Parliament referendum last October. We’ve been blithely posting a project each day, celebrating collaborations with Noongar artists and Elders to share their stories, their way. And that’s all nice, however on reflection, in a post-referendum Australia there is a lot of hurt and anger and rejection, and that needs to be addressed. That’s reflected in the NRW theme this year "now more than ever"; it’s an urgent call for progress. Reconciliation needs to be the work of wadjelas / white fellas, and that work starts with truth telling. So, instead of celebratory posts, we’re inviting you to make plans for tonight or maybe the weekend - make a cuppa, get comfy on the couch, pop on the tellie, and settle in for some truth telling. We’re recommending that you turn to SBS On Demand and watch The Australian Wars. It’s a three-part award winning documentary series that traces the Australian frontier wars from the landing of the First Fleet in 1788 until the 1920s. Created by the brilliant First Nations filmmaker Rachel Perkins, it seeks to understand the tactics and strategies employed by both British and Aboriginal people, and asks why war was never declared. The series focuses particularly on Aboriginal resistance to settlement, and explores the lives of those involved in the wars, its impact and legacy on Australia today, and what has been called "the great Australian silence" about many of the massacres.
