In 1933, the United States Congress designated May 22 as National Maritime Day in honor of the sailors and mariners who support the nation's economy and security. On this day in 1819, an American steamship named Savannah sailed from Savannah, GA, on the first steam-powered transoceanic voyage. Thank you to anyone who has ever worked in the maritime industry.
