📢 Automotive materials and compounds are identified and classified using application codes in the International Material Data System (IMDS). These application codes can be active, inactive, or concealed, which affects their use and reporting. How these statuses differ:
1. Active Application Codes: These are valid and recognised material or substance codes recognised by IMDS. These active codes can be selected for IMDS reporting.
Active application codes usually meet the current rules, industry standards, and OEM criteria. In IMDS, new materials or substances and updated codes are marked active.
Active application codes are acknowledged by the IMDS system and automotive stakeholders, ensuring accurate and compliant material reporting.
2. Inactivated Application Codes: These are material or substance codes that were formerly active but are now inactive in the IMDS system. These codes are no longer reportable.
Changes in regulations, industry standards, or the phase-out of materials might cause inactivated codes. Application codes are usually replaced or reclassified in IMDS when they become inactive.
IMDS reporting should not employ inactivated application codes because they may produce erroneous data or violate regulations or OEM requirements. Inactivated codes should be replaced with active codes or addressed according to OEM or regulatory agency rules during reporting.
3. Hidden application codes: These are material or substance codes in the IMDS database that are not visible or selectable for reporting purposes. Users are usually denied access to these codes for secrecy or proprietary reasons.
Hidden application codes may be related with specialized materials or OEM or supplier-specific compounds. Authorized parties or under certain conditions can access these codes, which are not for general use or reporting.
Hidden application codes should only be used or reported if authorized by the OEM or regulatory body. Using hidden codes without permission may cause data errors or noncompliance.
In conclusion, active application codes can be used for material reporting in IMDS, inactivated codes are invalid and should be replaced with appropriate active codes, and concealed codes are not for public usage or reporting unless explicitly authorized.
Understanding these distinctions is essential for accurate and compliance IMDS material reporting and ethical automotive supply chain procedures.
