The use of LLMs in day-to-day business is already becoming the norm for a lot of us. It sounds like there's general agreement among recruiters (at least those that my colleague spoke with) that using something like ChatGPT to rewrite a resume or to draft the presentation emails about a candidate would be fine. It's an interesting question… knowing that candidates are likely going to be using AI to get their work done anyway, does it matter to employers whether they know how to write a resume and cover letter, or is it more valuable that they know how to use AI?

It has been interesting to observe the integration of #AI into the workplace, especially #recruiting processes. According to SHRM, here are 4 ways recruiters are utilizing AI tools in their work: — Candidate research — Refining job descriptions — Composing candidate outreach — Developing interview questions However, the balance of human touch is needed. Are AI generated resumes the problem or do AI generated resumes highlight the issues with resumes? If I use AI to write my resume and someone notices, so I don't get the role but if the person who does get the role had paid a professional resume writer, who is more qualified? Resume writing is a required skill that loses most or all of its value as soon as you are hired in less it relevant to the role. It, like the SATs, doesn't properly test someone's relevant skills or knowledge and is heavily influenced by outside factors. Resumes are a barrier that blocks people with their disabilities, using a language other than their first, socioeconomic status and lacking support systems like having people that can help. The hiring process is maintained by thoes that have survived it. If you have never struggled with all of the barriers embedded within, how would you fix them? If writing a resume is easy for you, others using AI may feel like cheating. Streaming the hiring process without knowing about the barriers can make them worse. Responding to the detection strategies in the article: "Ask personal, experience-based questions as a part of your application process." This adds more cognitive load and time requirement to those who are already struggling. "Lean heavily into reference checks." Further harms people with less experience or escaping bad work places. "Pay close attention to the skills section." Maybe they have all the required skills; they organize them for the ease of the reader and don't add irrelevant skills to save space. "Implement phone screens." A real candidate may sound fake because they don't do well on the phone while a fake one has a good script and charm to sound confident. "Observe their in-person or email presentation." and "Cross-check what they have written versus how they are positioned on LinkedIn and other platforms." In my current resume I had to push myself to brag about what I had done in my last role. When I showed it to a career counselor, she told me I was still being too humble. So, I have to disconnect it more from my writing style even more to make it better. People don't write on their resume and LinkedIn in the same way. And if they are using AI for their resume, they could also be using it for everything else. "Consider including other options (ideally something proprietary to your company) beyond résumés and cover letters in your application process to guarantee human involvement and potential fit." Are you paying them for their work? It is very low effort for a company to ask candidates to do and exercise. But you are offloading that onto candidates, further disfranchising thoes that don't have the extra time and effort.
