"With an increasing number of aging Americans suffering from severe health conditions, there is an urgent demand for more geriatric practitioners. This deficit strains the healthcare infrastructure, potentially leading to the mismanagement of elder health crises and underscoring the importance of attracting, training, and retaining specialized health professionals in this field." https://lnkd.in/ehBAv7M5 #seniorliving #chroniccaremanagement #qualityofcare #PalliativeCare #seniorcare #healthcare #disability #HomeHealth

As the challenges in aged care persist, it's essential to reflect on our approach. The refusal of individuals with complex needs in aged care homes is not just a moral concern but also bears a substantial cost of $1.7 million daily on the public system. Is this implication due to a lack of skilled workforce in the system? 🤔 Could a collaborative effort across the health industry, leveraging skilled workforce resources, be the key to providing comprehensive care in rural and regional communities? Let's spark a conversation on reimagining how we allocate and utilize resources for a more integrated and effective healthcare system. The rising cost of healthcare, including Medicare, has become a significant concern in recent years. As healthcare expenses continue to increase, there is a growing emphasis on cost containment measures. These measures aim to manage and control healthcare costs while ensuring access to quality care for individuals. Cost containment in healthcare involves several strategies. Preventive care and early intervention can reduce the need for expensive treatments. Streamlining administrative processes and utilizing technology improve efficiency and reduce waste. Enhancing care coordination minimizes duplication and fragmented care. Transparent pricing and increased competition empower consumers to make informed decisions. Policy changes like value-based care models and drug price negotiation aim to ensure affordability and sustainability. Ultimately, cost containment in healthcare is a complex and ongoing challenge. It requires a multifaceted approach involving various stakeholders, including healthcare providers, policymakers, insurers, and patients, to find sustainable solutions that balance cost, quality, and accessibility of care. So important to highlight the importance of care workers coordinating closely with with family caregivers.
With more and more health care being delivered in the home, family caregivers have become, in effect, health care providers themselves. It’s time for health care institutions, providers and payers to treat them as the integral members of the care team that they are and give them the support they need to participate in their loved ones’ care with confidence. Fortunately, policymakers are starting to acknowledge the role family caregivers play and consider them in rules that affect the health and well-being of their loved ones. Case in point: a new proposal for Medicare to reimburse providers for training family caregivers. This is an important trend in health policy – and one that AARP will keep pushing to expand. #caregiving #Medicare #healthcare https://lnkd.in/evYtJKCC

Value-added services, such as death doulas, community health workers, integrative therapies, and much more, can create a huge difference in the quality of care for patients and families while differentiating your post-acute, home-based care agency. But these services are not reimbursed under the current fee-for-service payment model, or through the CMS Hospice Benefit. This is where value-based contracts can make a difference. With value-based care, providers decide what services are the most impactful and create the necessary benefit for the patient. Food for thought. National Institute on Aging (NIA) Tips for long-distance caregivers: Many people live far away from their family or friends who need help. If you don’t live nearby, you can still provide support and assistance as a long-distance caregiver. From a distance, you may be able to: •Serve as an information provider on information about relevant health conditions, navigating changing needs, and overseeing insurance benefits •Arrange for in-home care by hiring professional caregivers, home health aides, or nursing aides •Order medical equipment, medicines, and other supplies the person needs Learn more here: https://bit.ly/43tG5P1 If you are a family caregiver to a person with Alzheimer’s you can find additional caregiver support tips through LEAF. LEAF (Life Enhancing Activities for Family Caregivers) is a fully online program being tested by researchers at UCSF and Northwestern University. The program is designed to increase levels of positive emotion, reduce stress, and provide supportive tools for Alzheimer's caregivers. Participation is free of cost, LEAF is funded by the National Institute on Aging. Learn more: https://bit.ly/408NMY2 #caregiver #carepartner #alzheimers #aging #support #resources

Q. "Is healthcare relying too much on family caregivers?" A. YES!!! Diane Eastabrook covers this topic in a recent Modern Healthcare article about the "linchpin" role of non-professional caregivers in today's US health system. So many of us end up in this unpaid, unrecognized, and unsupported role, often suddenly as the result of a crisis scenario with a loved one, and most often with NO training or guidance to speak of. Oh, and we don't get to just walk away from our current responsibilities either-- add this role on top of everything else. It can feel impossible. If this sounds familiar, and it's all just too much, feel free to reach out anytime for some guidance, support, and perhaps even just a sympathetic ear. We understand and might even be able to assist as you navigate everything that comes next: ☎ https://lnkd.in/gBAYinRM #heretohelp #familycaregiving #lifespannavigation
