Today, we reflect on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. In the not so distant past, and still today, there are massive injustices and hardships inflicted on the Indigenous Peoples of this nation. This is a time to reflect on what has occurred in the past, what is still occurring, and work together towards figuring this out to find a path forward for everyone that is safe and prosperous. We don't need to wait for any one stakeholder to get things moving. Everyone can contribute to making a difference through action... reconciliaction. We are committed to working with Indigenous communities to make that possible. We reaffirm our commitment to foster a culture that encourages both inclusion, and diversity. #NationalTruthandReconciliationDay #OrangeShirtDay #YEGConstruction #YEG #YEGDesign #YEGEngineer #YEGBusiness #YEGBuilding #YEGLocal #YVRDesign #YVRBusiness #YYCBusiness #YYCDesign #Engineer #Engineering #StructuralEngineering #StructuralEngineer #CivilEngineering #CivilEngineer #DesignEngineer #ProjectManagement #SmartDesign #WhatTheClientWants #CVL #CVLEngineers #EngineeringMadeSimple #BuildCoolShit

𝗩𝗞𝗟𝗦 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁: 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗶𝗽𝗲𝘀 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 We are excited to announce the start of the Living Lab phase of the VKLS Project! 🔍 The VKLS project focuses on a vertical cables and pipes system, and aims to improve infrastructure maintenance with the installation of an underground rack to carry pipes and cables. This research project investigates feasibility of this system in practice, including evaluation of damage and deformation, as well as constructability of the cables and pipes system. If this system evaluation is positive, then this can improve maintainability and reduce underground congestion a lot! After completing the engineering & design phase, which delved into optimizing rack design, operational actions, risk identification, and setting up monitoring systems, we now enter the practical Living Lab phase. During this phase, our vision is to closely monitor key parameters and risks in the construction process, with the aim of enhancing the project's effectiveness and functionality. Looking ahead, our focus will be on learning valuable lessons from the living lab phase and further refining our research to drive continuous improvement. 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘂𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀! It was great to hear the unique perspective of former land speed record holder, Richard Noble OBE, talking about the importance of innovation within UK engineering at the Advanced Engineering show recently. A few take aways from me listening to Richard’s talk: ▪ With a flat economy and an urgent need to stimulate growth, those connected to engineering in the UK need to think differently - and “work like hell” - to make British engineering competitive in a challenging international market. ▪ With experience of overcoming bureaucracy to deliver historic engineering projects, Richard has seen first-hand that overly officious processes can stifle progress and original thinking. ▪ UK engineering can be guilty of “excessive financial caution” and a “deeply ingrained risk averse culture”. Whereas, companies and countries willing to take risks will ultimately be rewarded. ▪ To facilitate an innovation-led approach, businesses should focus on shifting from a ‘command and control culture’ to ‘self-actuation’, where people are fully invested in delivering the best outcome within engineering projects, not simply delivering more of the same. ▪ Engineering should not be done working in silos and “lateral communication is crucial”. Richard shared examples of how opening up channels of communication across landmark engineering projects, and engineering organisations in general, can deliver innovation, insight, and problem solving not otherwise possible. Working for a business that helps UK engineering organisations to innovate and challenge traditional methods of working, these reflections – coming from such a position of experience - resonated with me. Wishing Richard and the #ThrustWSH team every success in their current challenge of setting the water speed record. I’m sure they will continue to set the standard for engineering innovation! #theorem #engineering #innovation

📢 Are you interested in the concept of shared mobility hubs? See this new publication from our colleagues Karst Geurs and Anna Grigolon together with Karla Münzel, Konstantinos Gkiotsalitis, David Duran, Benjamin Büttner, Christoph Kirchberger, Jesse Pappers, Lluis Martinez, Antonia Graf, Julia Hansel, Roxani Gkavra, Roman Klementschitz. This review paper introduces a multidimensional typology (SmartHubs Integration Ladder) for shared mobility hubs, involving physical, digital, and democratic integration. It reveals a gap in existing shared mobility hub concepts, emphasizing the importance of digital and democratic integration dimensions, and the need for universal design principles to reach “smarter” shared mobility hubs ensuring maximum user and societal value! 🌍🔗🚗 🚲 #UrbanMobility #SharedMobility #SmartHubs #Sustainability https://lnkd.in/eYym_Eyj

It's #HispanicHeritageMonth! We asked faculty members about their experience at ASU as part of the Hispanic community. Assistant Teaching Professor Monica Perrin spoke about the importance of representation in construction management. "When underrepresented people, specifically in the Hispanic community, see me in classes or on construction projects, they feel comfortable in either reaching out for assistance or questions in the field. It also gives them the confidence to enter into engineering, construction management or other professional careers that they may not have considered previously." #ASUengineering #ForksUpLosDiablos

Chairman at Arlesey Town FC. Business Growth Manager at Continuity Care Services - Your Team, Your Time, Your Life. (P/T Senior Infrastructure & Utilities Consultant. Experience to ministerial level).
Applications open for the #PolicyFellowshipProgramme (Closes 20 May). Just putting together my Royal Academy of Engineering Policy Challenge summary. This is how I found out about my character and how I have naturally incorporated #SystemsThinking into my work in #Utilities and #Infrastructure. I love coaching people along the way so that consideration for utilities in the earlier stages of #Planning #Development & #Projects helps everyone involved! I especially like to show how #DNOs, who pride themselves on keeping the lights on, need more time than just 'flicking the switch'! Working with #Power #Water #WasteWater #Telecoms #Developments & #Infrastructure organisations & understanding the #Regulators & #Legislation enables me to help #Consultancies, #Clients, #Contractors and even #Homeowners pave the way for better delivery of their requirements. Is there anything you think I should add to the page? How about applying for the Policy Fellowship yourself? Applications close on 20 May 2024. #PolicyChallenge #RAEng #ApplicationsOpen #PFApplications
