Having a working Alipay in Shanghai really made a difference in getting around. With this we were able to pay in convenience stores and restaurants, take the metro and pay the taxi. It was a good thing international Visa and MasterCard can now be linked to Alipay. Setting it up was a challenge. I tried to set up WeChat first but the identify verification failed there. Here are tips on setting up Alipay. 1. Have your credit card and a clear photo of your passport info page ready. 2. After you install and login to Alipay, select the dropdown to Shanghai. 3. Tap on Pay/Receive and enter your credit card number. You will be asked to setup your PIN so don't forget that. 4. Tap on Transport and select Metro to setup your Metro card. You will be asked to enter 3 fields: name, ID type = Passport and ID number = Passport Number. Once you tap on Agree, you may notice that it will just erase the 3 fields that you entered. 5. To fix this, go back to the main screen and tap on More -> Hello Bike. 6. You will be asked to confirm your identity. At this point, you need to select Scan my passport (select from gallery) to have it automatically enter the values in the fields. You will notice that the name field is populated with the Last Name followed by the First Name and Middle name. Double check the fields and correct if there are typos. 7. If confirmed you can go back to the Transport page and enter the 3 fields again. When you tap Agree, this should succeed already. 8. You are now ready to use Pay and Transport in Alipay. When paying just show your QR code to the cashier who will scan it. Just note that it may require you to tap on a confirm button or enter an OTP to complete payment. Sometimes it just goes through. When using the Metro, just scan the QR on the turnstile reader upon entering and exiting.
