One of my new relationships in the Open Style Lab community has opened a window into a world I had not be exposed to in the past. That is the world of individuals with dwarfism or little people (adult height of 4 feet 10 inches (147 centimeters) or less). Levi Waterhouse has graciously shared his life story with me and others. As I further explore the challenges he has shared, it frustrates me as far as the lack of options both in clothing and shoe wear. One designer, Chamiah Dewey, is changing this for people with dwarfism. DEWEY's goal in fashion is to represent and celebrate people under 5ft. Why? - "The emotional state of both men and women is deeply influenced by what they wear, with 96% of people agreeing that clothing impacts their mood and self-perception." Adaptive clothing is very much on the cusp of becoming a mainstream category. We're still early, and we still have a long way to go, but there are whispers of a much larger movement that is gaining momentum. I often get asked about the number of brands entering the space. Am I threatened? Here's the thing: in the four categories No Limbits currently serves (people with lower limb difference, wheelchair users, sensory friendly, and folks with limited dexterity,) the market has been estimated at $2.6 billion in the US alone. We need more brands to enter the space. The challenge we face is not that the market is niche, it's that people with disabilities have felt ignored for so long that they don't know that adaptive options are out there, and unless they're newer in their disability journey, they've given up searching for it. Every brand in the adaptive clothing space benefits from more activity in it. And there are so many problems to solve that it's easy to be collaborative instead of competitive. It's for this reason that events like Denver Fashion Week are so instrumental. #WeAreBillionStrong I'd like to highlight an insightful piece by Jasmin Ambiong, Director of communication for Billion Strong.  She addresses common misconceptions about how people with visual disabilities relate to fashion. Jasmin shares her experiences shopping for clothes, managing her wardrobe, and coordinating outfits as a blind girl. She describes adaptations that help her dress stylishly and independently. Her article makes an important point - interests in fashion are personality-based, not disability-based. She and her sighted sister have opposing styles, further proving this. Jasmin's perspectives open an eye-opening dialogue. She argues that fashion should empower everyone, regardless of ability. Her words encourage designers and the industry to be more inclusive. "Richa Srivastava, chief creative officer of women's concept and design, explains that the adaptive modifications improved the experience of taking each Anthro staple on and off, as well as wearing it all day long. Take the Colette pant for example. Just like the standard design, the adaptive version has a high-rise waist and a cropped flare hem. But to make the pants more comfortable for wheelchair users, Anthropologie took a three-fold approach. 'We adjusted the rise to better suit someone seated, eliminated back pockets to reduce bulkiness when sitting, and incorporated features like magnetic snap closures, zipper openings along pant inseams, as well as tabs and snaps for customizable length adjustments.'"
