Old Dogs Can’t Learn New Tricks This cliché wrongly suggests that older individuals are inherently averse to learning or new experiences. Research shows that resistance to change is less about age and more about individual openness. Let's shift the narrative to celebrate the ongoing potential for growth and learning in older adults #ageism #ageisjustanumber

Providing Neuro-affirming Diagnostic Evaluations for Autism in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Hampshire
From the ASAN: "The Judge Rotenberg Center (JRC) is an institution in Massachusetts. People with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), mental health disabilities, and learning disabilities live there. Both kids and adults live at the JRC. Many autistic people live there. Some people at the JRC are forced to wear an electric shock device. This device is used to punish the person wearing it. The device punishes people by giving them electric shocks. These electric shocks are very painful. The JRC shocks people for small things like refusing to take off their jackets or stimming. People with disabilities and our allies have been fighting to stop the JRC. We want to stop people at the JRC from getting shocked. We’ve been working together to try to stop the JRC for more than 10 years." Join our campaign. The ASAN created a series of short videos on their Instagram page about submitting public comments to the Food and Drug Administration on their proposed rule to ban the use of electric skin shock devices. It's been nineteen years since I became a mother, fourteen years since I started writing about motherhood. In this journey, I've produced two significant works: One, the "Map of Motherhood", an assessment tool for maternal competence, and the other, "Sustainable Good Parenting", a parenting philosophy prefaced by Dr. Richard Ryan. For years, I've spoken at universities, on screens, and authored books about both. When the pandemic hit, planned new talks for Sustainable Good Parenting got canceled, and the formation of the Sustainable Good Parenting Association and the SGP Leadership Program got stalled. These transformative tools for mothers fell into obscurity... We know many valuable initiatives aren't getting enough visibility or reaching those in need, but still, I couldn't help but wonder, "was there something else I could do?" The Map of Motherhood was a tool that resonated with everyone, from map engineers to writers... In the past few weeks, two things happened. Firstly, the Map of Motherhood underwent clinical evaluation by Expert Birgül Bayoğlu (entirely on her own initiative). A decision was made to create a program to teach young professionals how to use the map application to positively influence mothers' feelings of competence. But it doesn't end there; the application, fitting the modern logic structure of "fuzzy logic," will be evaluated philosophically as an example of Rational-Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT) at the Philosophy Association's 14th Workshop, and may be used in other professional fields as well. In essence, the Map of Motherhood serves as a psychological and philosophical key for those aspiring to practice Sustainable Good Parenting. In 2024-2025, we are preparing to provide certified training to teachers, pediatricians, and counseling psychologists. 💛💛💛 https://lnkd.in/d2ZghmDH

This The Wall Street Journal piece articulates an area of need that may have well been overlooked up till the recent past. Needs of #Caregivers are coming to the fore and they have mostly been associated with spouses, parents, other hired roles like domestic helpers, home nurses, and so on. Recent findings from DayOne (https://lnkd.in/gU2RVVJR), a caregiver well-being programme in #Singapore, has shown that many dads and moms whose children have developmental needs declined mental/psychosocial support because they felt they did not have the time and the well-being of their child should take precedence. But, among dads and moms who accepted help saw decline in those reporting moderate to severe levels of #anxiety and/or #depression symptoms, from 21.3 to 10.6 per cent. I'm always reminded of the pre take-off emergency briefing that advises the adult to put on his/her O2 mask before helping the younger passenger or next person in need. One just can't run on empty. Likewise, I strongly believe in every #society, caregivers could well be younger children who straddle between school and caregiving at home or facility. They need help too, and it's not often about the money. They also need relief from the caregiving routine, to broaden their social network and discover their own life's course. They will mature sooner than their peers, but they could also be internalizing their lack and frustrations. Let's keep a look out for this group, so we can all lend a helping hand to lessen their baggage and chart their growth into adulthood. #mentalhealth #mentalwellness #mentalhealthawareness #motivation #inclusion #mindfulnes #kindness
