TEACHER-GPT?
Practicing first-grade English with my son using ChatGPT app powered by GPT-4o with multimodal capabilities.
My quick thoughts and observations:
1. it took me 15 seconds to prompt for this exercise. Perfext UX. 👍
2. very often you just get the message that the servers are overloaded🫤
3. Slovak support is still not perfect yet (in both recongnition and synthesis). Czech impressed me more. English is out of question - insanely good.
4. you reach the cap (limit) of 80 queries per 3hrs very soon
5. although the model supports vision (video), the app does not have any option for camera input, yet (please let me know in the comments if you know more when could we expect this)? 🤔
6. I don't recommend to let your kids to play with it unsupervised (for safety reasons).
🤖Google adds AI conversation practice for English language learners

🔍 Google is testing its AI listening skills with a feature that lets people speak into their phones and practice English with a conversational AI bot.
The feature may pop up based on translating to or from English with Google on an Android device.

#ChatGPT#Duolingo#Grammarly
Exciting release, no doubt about it! However, one question remains unclear to me, maybe you can shed some light: How do they plan to scale interfaces?
ChatGPT (or Gemini, or any other LLM engine) is already outperforming individual apps in many areas such as language learning, translating, and editing. But there's a big difference between an app like Grammarly, which seamlessly operates just two pixels away from your input field, and having to switch between an app or a website to write a query and then copy the results back. It might only take an extra two seconds, but from a UX perspective, it's a chasm.
The same goes for Duolingo. Technically, it can teach you a language, but where will the emotional UX, like Duolingo's engaging mascot, come from if another app or a GPT-based application is needed? That's direct competition, and it's not simple at all.
I'm curious how they'll eventually tackle the challenge of competing with specialized applications tailored for specific jobs.
Are there already examples where this has been resolved?
If not, the growth rate is unlikely to return to the levels seen at the launch of ChatGPT.
Grateful for Luis's spotlight on my recent work prompting for Duolingo's Roleplay feature! Developing Roleplay has involved a lot of creative and pedagogical problem solving. We're constantly pushing boundaries to ensure that learning a language is as engaging and effective as possible. Check out my post for an inside look at how we build the prompts that power Roleplay. #promptengineering#llms#AI#languagelearning#duolingo
People want to know: If ChatGPT is so amazing, can't I just ask it to teach me a new language? The answer is... it's not that simple. This is a great post from Parker Henry, one of our Learning Designers, who has been hard at work crafting fun and effective prompts for Roleplay, one of our newest conversation features.

Since the arrival of ChatGPT, every bedroom developer now thinks they have the ability to build an app for people who want to learn or practise a language.
This means we're seeing a lot of apps made by people with no background in language teaching and very little interest in using language correctly.
I've collected some depressing examples of language learning apps using incorrect English:

#1: AI for Practical Language Learning
I’ve been using the great Duolingo app to brush up on my Spanish skills, but I often find myself needing hands-on, real-time practice. The new Duolingo Max feature got me thinking about using ChatGPT as an additional conversation partner.
🚀 And it worked out great!
ChatGPT adapts to my language level, providing personalized practice sessions. On request, it can even assess my language proficiency. This approach allows me to improve my Spanish step by step, tailored to my needs, anytime and anywhere.
⚙️ Set Up:
- ChatGPT iOS App: Download and install the ChatGPT app on your iPhone.
- Voice: Enable voice input for the conversation experience.
- Conversation Starter: e.g., "I would like to practise speaking Spanish."
- Environment: I practice Spanish while walking my dog Mochi.

The question that many people are asking - 'Can I use #ChatGPT to practice a new #language'?
Beyond the anecdotes and opinions, here are some serious explanations by the experts in the field - Duolingo. The article by Parker Henry is a guide on
how to structure #languagelearning#roleplay, with directions on setting the objectives, roles, narrative, and language level.

A great example of how Large Language Models (LLMs) are becoming an integral part of the processes within applications and tools, without the need for the user to be an "prompting expert", and even without their realizing it.
I believe this is the new step we are witnessing these months, and it confirms that not everyone needs to learn programming or become an expert in prompting... although I do think everyone should be able to understand the scope and dynamics of these systems.
I strongly recommend the explanation in the note by Parker Henry from Duolingo, which explains in a simple and didactic way how the power of GPT can be embedded in a tool.
