What comes to mind when you think of the 4th of July? Holiday? Parades? Fireworks? But 248 years ago, it was a different three words. Conviction. Courage. Sacrifice. On July 4, 1776, 56 men passed a resolution declaring independence from England. They were immediately declared traitors. Benjamin Franklin told them, "We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately." Their Declaration would cost many their lives and fortunes- 9 paying the ultimate price. They all had more worldly substance to lose than they had to gain but they were convinced that the freedom they sought would be their gift, not only to succeeding generations of Americans but to the world. It paved the way for a radical new way of thinking about government that would change the course of history and thinking...a nation conceived in liberty with self government, limited government, checks and balances, freedom of speech, religion and the press, rights coming from God not a King and all this built upon virtue and faith. The American Experiment. After the Constitutional Convention on September 18, 1787, a prominent Philadelphia lady asked Dr. Benjamin Franklin, “Well Doctor what have we got a republic or a monarchy? Franklin replied, “A republic, if we can keep it.” Every generation has to do their part to keep it. Will we? I'm grateful today for our country and its founders. Aren't you?

A university professor posed a challenge to his students. Each of them had a balloon with their name. The balloons would fall from the ceiling and they would have 5 minutes to find theirs. If everyone found the one with their name, they won... if not, they lost. Although they tried with all their energy to find them, no one succeeded. The teacher put the balloons back and told them, "When you catch a balloon, give it to its owner". The test took less than 3 minutes to complete. The teacher finished by saying, "Happiness is like these balloons. If each of us looks only for our own, we will never find it. But if we look for others', we will also find ours." "The bastards tried to come over me last night. I guess they didn't know I was a Marine." - Last words of Private First Class Edward H. Ahrens United States Marine Corps Warrior Rescue (501c3 Nonprofit) During the Battle for Guadalcanal, the 1st Marine Raider Battalion landed on the island of Tulagi, with 22 year old, 140 pound PFC Edward Ahrens among them. That night the Japanese lunched a vicious counterattack. Ahrens stood his ground, securing the right flank of the line. In the morning, Ahrens' company commander, Capt Lewis Walt (later 4 Star General Lew Walt), found Ahrens in his fighting hole. 11 enemy dead surrounded the hole. A dead Japanese officer and dead Japanese sergeant were in the hole next to him. The blood-covered Marine reclined against the dirt wall, gunshot and stab wounds across his body bearing witness to his savage fight. Ahrens still clutched the dead officer's sword in his hand. Upon seeing his commander, Ahrens uttered his last words, then died silently in Walt's arms. For his heroic one-man stand, PFC Ahrens was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross. "...serving with Company A, FIRST Marine Raider Battalion, during the landing assault and seizure of enemy Japanese-held Tulagi Island, British Solomon Islands, on the night of 7–8 August 1942. While a member of a security detachment protecting the right flank of his battalion, Private First Class Ahrens, with utter disregard for his own personal safety, single-handedly engaged in hand-to-hand combat a group of the enemy attempting to infiltrate the rear of the battalion. Although mortally wounded, he succeeded in killing the officer in command of the hostile unit and two other Japanese, thereby breaking up the attack. His great personal valor and indomitable fighting spirit were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. The best footage of F-35B’s Talent The F-35B Lightning II is the Marine Corps variant of the Joint Strike Fighter and features a vertical lift fan and pivoting engine nozzle to deliver vertical landing and short takeoff capability to expeditionary airfields. The F-35 will replace AV-8B Harrier IIs in the Marine Corps inventory. Designed to operate from austere bases and a range of air-capable ships with its short takeoff/vertical landing capability, the F-35B can also takeoff and land conventionally from longer runways on major bases. F-35B aircraft have been delivered to the U.S. Marines and the U.K., whose forces are training together at the Integrated Training Center at Eglin Air Force Base. STOVL aircraft are also stationed at the first operational F-35 base, Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Ariz., and are completing flight test at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md. The Italian Air Force will also operate the B-variant. The F-35B has a Lift Fan just behind the cockpit and an engine that can swivel 90 degrees when in short takeoff/vertical landing mode. Because of the Lift Fan, the STOVL variant has smaller internal weapon bay and less internal fuel capacity than the F-35A. It uses the probe and drogue method of aerial refueling.
