World Economic Forum is projecting that markets for voluntary #BiodiversityCredits could reach $2 billion in 2030 and $69 billion by 2050. If the top 500 global businesses committed 1% of corporate profits to meeting nature targets, it could amount to $43 billion per year, equivalent to almost one fifth of the 2025 nature-based solutions gap identified by the UN 🇺🇳 Nonetheless, at the Inter-American Development Bank we’re supporting countries to set regulated and mandatory compensation for biodiversity. Habitat Banks have proven to be an effective instrument to align local, national and global targets and regenerate ecosystems at scale. Future is #NaturePositive 🪷

The integrity of the market #carbon must evaluate the importance of the landscape whose stock carbon is negotiated. For example, in the indigenous zone in Brazil, the carbon stock is essential for the culture reproduction of these peoples if they respect your autonomy; in addition, its maintains biodiversity to offer a habitat for different species of flora and fauna. Another example is the #agroforestry of cocoa in the south of Bahia. The cabruca is a sink of carbon and #functions as a #habitat for many #species, including those in danger of #extinction, and possibility the production of #cocoa, with economic inclusion. On the other hand, a #farm with the monoculture of pinus has the carbon. Still, it isn't habitat-appropriate for the highest biodiversity. It does a low generation of work because it is associated with a model of production mechanized inadequate to the compatibility #sink of carbon with much #biodiversity, #equitability and social inclusion. In the same sense, cocoa production in #agroforestry in Central and West Africa intensified management in a way that #reduced #native #forest coverage to less than 10% of the original range, compromising the #resilience of carbon #sequestration (within and without the farm) in the #landscape and the maintenance of #biodiversity. The development of the carbon market must honour the potential of each landscape in #mitigating #greenhouse #gases, in addition to the possibility of tradable carbon wells to maintain biodiversity, #ecosystem #services, #social #equity and #economic #inclusion. https://lnkd.in/esvHx96H

The financial industry is stepping up its game to integrate indicators, recognizing that economic value is not divorced from natural resources and ecosystems.

Biodiverse ecosystems provide nature-based solutions that buffer us from natural disasters such as floods and storms, filter our water and regenerate our soils. Protecting and restoring natural ecosystems is also vital to fighting climate change. Nature-based solutions could provide 37% of the cost-effective CO2 mitigation needed by 2030 to maintain global warming within 2°C
