I help Financial Service firms become go-to places for trustworthy Insights on money. Latest book: 'Who misleads you about money?'

Country first, Party second. I've never voted Labour, but I was impressed by this first press conference from Kier Starmer. And I think most Businesses could benefit from a similar slogan. Customer first, Profit Second. The truth is that political parties (and businesses) tend to benefit when they operate 'in service' to others rather than themselves. Many hard choices are ahead, but so far, so good with this guy.

Hey guys, I'm super grateful for the interactions and alternative views here.  And, to be clear, I agree that having the right team is vital.  My point, however - is that to thrive long term, a business must have an 'external' (consumer) focus. This is merely the same as Starmer's point that Country-First will be the hallmark of his Gov't.  From my experience in the corporate world, this means designing services (and recruiting and supporting) the right people to meet (or exceed) consumer expectations.  And how refreshing it was, after decades of failure, to see the FCA coming around to this idea too!  Note how the Consumer Duty elements are the same as the four 'C's of marketing – developed in the 1990s. Coincidence? I think not. Here’s a tweak; team first, customer second. Two points: 1. A happy, motivated, and well rewarded team, will delight customers. So ‘team’, in my view, comes first 2. Profit is an outcome of the focus on ‘team’ and ‘customer’, so if we focus entirely on the process, the outcome (profit, in this case) takes care of itself Gary Vaynerchuk talks about the importance of process in one of his podcasts this week.

I instructed Kier Starmer during his time at the Bar. A phenomenally intelligent and astute mind. I am apolitical. That's my professional experience. I think the UK is in safe hands. You don't rise to be the head of Doughty Street Chambers if you're not astute and intelligent. People will see.

For a sustainable business model, you're spot on! I have been advising on Financial Protection for over 15 years and write a lot of business. Providing the best advice to each client, even if it means recommending they keep or amend their existing cover rather than arranging new cover through me, upholds my professional integrity and ensures the best outcomes for each client. This approach fosters stronger client relationships and increases the likelihood that they, or their friends, will think of me when they need my services in the future. Consistently prioritising client needs also positively influences how I present my recommendations and instils confidence in my clients that I’m not just trying to sell them something for the sake of it.

You've just clearly polarised the thoughts I have EXACTLY when I'm creating bouquets... If I think the Apricot Premium 'Bellini' roses work better than the white more economical roses I've bought, then I'll use those, despite the customer ordering a lower budget bouquet. I just can't send out something I'm not happy with. So it's Customer First, Profit second, EVERY Time, for me!

"Customer first, Profit Second" - look around and tell me where this holds true? Don't buy-in any slick talk and be wary every time you hear it - what so far?

In a serviced based business, in my view a people first, customer second, shareholder third approach is the way. One in turn looks after the others. However not all businesses and so heavily reliant on the continuity of staff so here customer first ✨️

Actions not words…. The PM deserves a period of grace, but ultimately he will be judged on delivery and outcomes not rhetoric.

I like this Paul. I'd adapt it to employees first, profit second though. If you look after your employees they look after the clients 😁
