Yes, they are completely different industries but at the end of the day, business is business. It doesn’t matter what sector you are in, put passion and enthusiasm into each one and watch them thrive. People think having loads of jobs during your lifetime is a negative thing but you’re collecting experience. This is invaluable so don’t be afraid to fail. Putting myself out there as a resource for anyone looking for insight on getting into and working in the #cannabisindustry. When I made a career switch and got my foot in the door during the late medical days, the workforce community felt extremely gated and it took a lot of trials/tribulations before I found someone who valued my transferrable skills honed outside the industry enough to hire me confidently and let me lead a team in cannabis for the first time. It always felt like you needed prior experience (total catch 22) or a referral from someone in the industry just to get an interview. But the rest is history for me after that. A lot has changed in the days since adult-use sales with market expansion, more open information sharing, and a growing need for quality hires in a shrinking labor market. Entry points aren't gated, it's not about who you know anymore in order to start your career -- but it can still be intimidating making a career switch. Where to I start? What are typical career paths to follow? Where can I educate myself? What are the types of companies with the strongest employer brand health? How much can I make in various roles? Whatever the questions, whatever the comment, feel free to shoot me a DM and I'll be happy to share what I know. To my dear friends at #PacBio: I struggle for the right words to express my sympathy for you today as you suffer a great loss. But even so, I feel compelled to reach out to you. I grieve with you over the loss of your job and being disconnected from a wonderful community. Fifteen months ago, when PacBio let me go, I went through many of the same feelings you’re going through today. Outrage: How could they do this to me? Don’t they know all the things I’ve done for this company? Panic: How will I pay my bills? What will happen to my family? Loss: I’ll miss my friends whom I’ve worked alongside like brothers and sisters to accomplish something great and who have enriched me in so many ways. But what pulled me through was determination: I had to find another job fast. And, most importantly, the support of my network of so many friends and colleagues. Today, I offer you my support. After the initial pain and shock wear off, I hope that you won’t blame yourself for something that’s truly beyond your control. You’re talented and valuable. You weren’t selected for this layoff because you’re deficient in any way. There’s nothing you could have done differently to change the outcome. I hope eventually you’ll feel pride—as I do—in being part of a place and technological achievements that were truly great! I hope you’ll look back at PacBio—as I do—as a place where you had the privilege to work with so many world-class scientists and outstanding human beings. A place where you learned so much, gained so many valuable skills, and made so many friends.
